CPV2/CPV2S — SF6 circuit switchers 72.5–245 kV

CPV2 and CPV2S are SF6 circuit switchers for 72.5–245 kV with a breaking current of up to 63 kA. The device combines an interrupter with full isolation of the open gap. It is used for switching and protection of power transformers, cables, shunt capacitor banks and reactors.

Description

The CPV2/CPV2S is built by the company's North American division in Richland (USA), at the same plant that makes the 3AP live tank breakers. The circuit switcher interrupts a short-circuit current in three cycles and costs less than a conventional dead tank breaker. It is valued most at tight substations. The horizontal version replaces an ordinary breaker, and the vertical one (up to 245 kV) takes up minimum space. In a refurbishment it is the vertical unit that is installed in place of an existing protective device.

The typical range covers rated voltages of 72.5, 121, 145, 170 and 245 kV. For each class there are models with breaking currents of 20, 25, 31.5 and 40 kA, and the CPV2S-245 is rated for 63 kA with an impulse withstand of 1050 kV. Rated currents lie in the range from 1200 to 4000 A, up to 3150 A for 121 and 145 kV. The impulse withstand of the insulation rises from 350 kV in the 72.5 kV class to 900 kV in the 245 kV class.

The mechanism is the FA spring type, the same as in the company's breakers worldwide. It is set up and tested at the factory. The interrupter works on the arc-assist principle. Small currents are extinguished by compression in the cylinder, while at large currents the arc heat raises the pressure in the heating chamber, and this gas extinguishes the arc.

The SF6 condition is monitored by a temperature-compensated pressure relay with two contact groups. The first gives a signal when the pressure approaches the lockout level, and the second blocks the operation at insufficient density. A rupture disc is fitted on each phase. Maintenance intervals are 12 and 25 years.

Units for 72.5–170 kV are shipped assembled, and those for 245 kV and above in subassemblies. Versions with and without a disconnector are available, on support structures 8, 10 or 12 ft high. The series is also used as a low-cost device for low temperatures with high breaking capacity. In the same brochure the manufacturer lists the 3AP2/3 and 3AP4/5 live tank breakers for 245–800 kV with a breaking current of up to 63 kA.
