INERTIA AmpRupter, AmpVac, V4/V7, High Speed Whip, ArcWhip — arc quenching attachments for 15–72.5 kV disconnect switches
The AmpRupter, AmpVac, V4/V7, High Speed Whip and ArcWhip arc quenching attachments are fitted to LineBOSS disconnect switches for on-load switching in the 15–72.5 kV classes. The vacuum interrupters break load currents up to 2000 A, and the AmpRupter gas-generating tube breaks up to 900 A at 27 kV. Whips are provided for charging currents and residual arcs.

Description
The attachments are fitted to LineBOSS disconnect switches, turning them into switching devices that interrupt load current, break loops, interrupt line and cable charging currents and transformer magnetizing currents in voltage classes from 15 to 72.5 kV. Vacuum and gas-generating (expulsion) devices are available, as well as whips and horns for operations without interrupting the load.
AmpRupter is an attachment with a gas-generating tube that breaks load currents up to 900 A at 27 kV, breaks loops and interrupts line and cable charging currents. During interruption the blade leaves the contact jaw and touches the arc-catching element, and the current is shunted through the attachment. The internal spring mechanism then opens the contacts, and the non-conductive gas quenches the arc at the first current zero crossing without current chopping. The device is tested to IEEE 1247-1998 and has a mechanical life of 2500 operations. AmpVac has a closed vacuum interrupter with no gas emission to the atmosphere. For the 15.5, 25.8 and 38 kV classes it breaks a load current (cos φ > 0.7) of 2000 A, breaks a loop of 1500 A, interrupts a cable charging current of 40 A and a magnetizing current of 21 A. At 48–138 kV, AmpVac is used for parallel switching where the recovery voltage does not exceed 38 kV. Mechanical and electrical life is 5000 operations.
V4 and V7 are single-gap vacuum interrupters that break load currents up to 2000 A at 48 and 72.5 kV. They replaced the earlier multi-chamber V2 and V3, do not take part in the circuit during closing and are not rated for closing onto a fault. Life is 5000 operations at full load. High Speed Whip (HSW) is a high-speed whip for interrupting line charging currents and transformer magnetizing currents up to 72.5 kV, with 5000 interruptions. The sectionalizer combines HSW and AmpVac and breaks parallel loops, charging currents and magnetizing currents on overhead lines under load. ArcWhip is a whip with an interrupting current of 10–20 A for quenching arcs from the residual energy of capacitor banks, transformers and conductors, with a life of about 150 interruptions.
The LineBOSS disconnect switch is designed to run without maintenance under most conditions. In aggressive environments the contact jaws and blades sometimes need lubrication, and worn contacts are replaced with a single-phase kit.
