3AV1 Blue — vacuum circuit breakers 72.5–145 kV with clean air insulation (live tank and dead tank)
3AV1 Blue are high-voltage vacuum circuit breakers for 72.5–145 kV, completely free of SF6 and other fluorinated gases. The arc is extinguished by a vacuum interrupter, and insulation is provided by clean dried air with 80 % nitrogen and 20 % oxygen. The breakers are intended for substations of grid and distribution companies, industrial and wind farm substations, and sites in cold climates.

Description
The technology has been transferred to high voltage from the medium-voltage class, where the company has produced vacuum interrupters for over 40 years and has supplied more than 6 million of them. Prototypes have been operating in European grids since 2010, and series production has continued since 2017. The global warming potential of the insulating medium is zero, so there is no gas density monitoring, no F-gas accounting and reporting, and no gas disposal at the end of service life.
The line has two versions. The live tank 3AV1 FG for 145 kV is rated for a rated current of up to 3150 A and a breaking current of 40 kA. It withstands a power-frequency test voltage of 275 kV, a lightning impulse of 650 kV and a peak withstand current of 108 kA. The dead tank 3AV1 Blue DT is made for 72.5, 123 and 145 kV with breaking currents of 40 or 63 kA, peak withstand current of 108 or 170 kA respectively, and a rated current of up to 3000 A. It has been tested to IEEE/ANSI and is aimed primarily at the North American market.
Both versions are built on the company's modular platform. The M2 class spring-operated mechanism, the control system, the frame and the kinematics are the same as in the SF6 breakers. According to the manufacturer, the vacuum device withstands 30 full short-circuit current interruptions against 10–12 for the SF6 equivalent, and 10,000 interruptions of the rated current of 3150 A against 6000. The standard break time is 3 cycles, optionally 2 cycles.
The insulating air does not liquefy in frost. Full performance is retained down to −60 °C without tank heating, and the upper limit is +55 °C for live tank and +50 °C for dead tank. The interrupter requires no maintenance during its service life. A visual inspection is made after 12 years, and maintenance after 25 years or 10,000 operations. The breakers are tested to IEC 62271-100, -110 and -310. For the operator this means a simpler substation. There are no gas density gauges, refill cylinders or leak logs, and the routine round is reduced to inspecting the mechanism and insulators. This is convenient for remote wind and industrial substations.

Questions and answers
What breaking current do 3AV1 Blue breakers have?
The live tank version breaks 40 kA. The dead tank version is supplied for 40 or 63 kA with a peak withstand current of 108 or 170 kA.
Can 3AV1 Blue be installed in areas with severe frost?
Yes, full performance is retained down to −60 °C without heating, because clean air does not liquefy. The upper limit is +55 °C for live tank and +50 °C for dead tank.
How many short-circuit current interruptions does the 3AV1 vacuum interrupter withstand?
According to the manufacturer, 30 full short-circuit interruptions against 10–12 for the SF6 equivalent. The interrupter breaks the rated current of 3150 A 10,000 times.
