3AP DT / SPS2 — SF6 dead tank circuit breakers 72.5–550 kV

3AP DT and SPS2 are SF6 dead tank circuit breakers for 72.5–550 kV in which the interrupter is housed in a grounded metal tank. Connection to the network is made through bushings with built-in current transformers. The units are installed at substations of grid companies, power plants and industry, especially in seismically active regions.

Description

The dead tank layout is traditional for the networks of North and South America. The grounded tank increases seismic withstand, and the bushings are convenient to use for built-in current transformers for metering and protection. All units have the FA spring-operated mechanism and 3AP interrupters shared with the live tank breakers.

The international 3AP DT line covers 72.5–550 kV. The 3AP1 DT is rated up to 362 kV, the compact 3AP1 DTC is made for 145 and 245 kV, and the 3AP2/3 DT up to 550 kV. The breakers come with a common or separate frames, with optional closing resistors and various current transformer options. The maximum breaking current reaches 90 kA, and interruption takes 2 cycles.

For the US market the SPS2/SPS2S series is built at the plant in Richland, Mississippi. Models for 123, 145 and 170 kV have breaking currents of 20, 31.5, 40, 50, 63 and 80 kA at rated currents of 1200–4000 A (up to 5000 A for 80 kA), impulse withstand of 550/650/750 kV and a break time of 3 cycles. No model needs capacitors to limit the rate of rise of recovery voltage. The breakers arrive assembled and tested, are not adjusted on site, and the first inspection is made after 12 years. The SPS2-550 for 550 kV has a rated current of up to 5000 A, a breaking current of up to 63 kA, a break time of 2 cycles and impulse withstand of up to 1800 kV. The mechanical class is M2, the capacitive switching class is C2, and the current transformers are supplied already installed. Versions for 245 and 362 kV are available.

Optionally available are single-pole operation IPO, the PSD controlled switching controller, composite bushings and a high-seismic version to IEEE 693. The breakers are tested to IEC and IEEE/ANSI.

Pure SF6 liquefies at low temperatures, so for cold climates the 3AP1 DT for 126–170 kV with an SF6 and CF4 mixture is offered. With 43 % SF6 it operates down to −50 °C, with 25 % SF6 down to −60 °C, both variants without tank heating. The rated current is 3150 A, the breaking current 40 kA, and the leakage is below 0.1 % per year.

Questions and answers

Are grading capacitors needed for SPS2 breakers?

No, no SPS2 model for 123–170 kV needs capacitors to limit the rate of rise of recovery voltage. This applies to all breaking currents up to 80 kA.

Which dead tank breaker suits a climate down to −60 °C?

The 3AP1 DT for 126–170 kV with a 25 % SF6 and CF4 mixture is available for such conditions and works without tank heating. With 43 % SF6 the limit is −50 °C, the rated current is 3150 A and the breaking current 40 kA.

What are the parameters of the SPS2-550 dead tank breaker?

The SPS2-550 is rated for 550 kV, a rated current of up to 5000 A and a breaking current of up to 63 kA. The break time is 2 cycles, the impulse withstand up to 1800 kV and the mechanical class M2.
