TX-8 supercritical steam turbine with four-flow exhaust up to 1,200 MW
TX-8 is the highest-output turbine in the TX line for thermal power plants, up to 1,200 MW at supercritical steam conditions. The shaft line consists of a high-pressure cylinder, a double-flow intermediate-pressure cylinder and two double-flow low-pressure cylinders. The turbine is installed in large base-load coal-fired units.

Description
TX-8 is built in a tandem arrangement with steam reheat. The four exhaust flows from the two LP cylinders are directed downward or sideways depending on the turbine hall layout. A four-cylinder shaft line is needed because of the large low-pressure steam volumes, which at units of this class no longer pass through a single double-flow LP cylinder. Units of the series of more than 1,100 MW have already been delivered, and the total installed capacity of TX-8 worldwide exceeds 60 GW.
Main steam pressure reaches 271 bar(a) (3,930 psia), main steam temperature up to 600 °C, reheat up to 630 °C (1,166 °F). Grid frequency is 50 or 60 Hz. Reheat to a higher temperature than the main steam raises cycle efficiency and reduces wetness in the last stages. The flow path is designed with dynamic optimization, and the machine uses supercritical steam technology. The series is designed for base load, and the manufacturer ranks unit availability among the highest in its class.
Examples of deliveries include the Jimah coal-fired plant in Malaysia, coal-fired plants in North Carolina and Illinois (USA) and the JERA Hekinan power plant in Japan. Besides new units, TX-8 is used to replace turbines at operating high-output units, where steam conditions and output must be raised without changing the unit class. The dimensions of the unit are determined for each project.
The manufacturer has built steam turbines since 1927. According to the manufacturer, by December 2023 a total of 2,038 units with a combined output of 217,652 MW had been delivered. Plants operate in Yokohama (Japan) and in Chennai (India). The first delivery to North America dates from 1967, and the company is now the largest supplier of steam turbine units from 200 MW there. In this market the turbines are supplied by the manufacturer's American subsidiary.
The scope of supply includes a turbine generator and the D-EHC digital control system, in which start-up is optimized according to rotor thermal stress. The manufacturer's turbine units last significantly longer than the expected 20 years, and one unit in Australia achieved 99.6 % reliability. The company also provides service, repair and upgrades of turbines and generators.
