Description
The manufacturer has more than 180 years of experience in turbine design and more than 31 900 turbines installed with a total output of more than 471 000 MW. The overall range of its turbines reaches a head of 1 800 m and an output of 800 MW per unit. In this line Francis covers medium heads, between Pelton impulse turbines for high heads and Kaplan turbines for low heads. On the basis of the same design the manufacturer also builds reversible pump-turbines for pumped-storage plants.
The turbines are built in horizontal or vertical form, for single-unit and multi-unit plants, and each design is fitted to the conditions of a particular hydropower plant to obtain the best efficiency in the most demanding modes. A wide operating range with high efficiency is confirmed by research work and model tests at the manufacturer's own hydraulic test rigs. The manufacturer emphasizes the durability and strength of the turbines. Francis is considered the most versatile type of hydro turbine, so it is installed at plants of very different scale, from small hydropower plants to units of hundreds of megawatts.
The turbine is supplied as a separate unit with an integrated ring gate or with a separate butterfly or spherical turbine inlet valve of the manufacturer's own production. The valve type is chosen by head, butterfly for low and medium pressure, spherical for high. Among the records is a 770 MW Francis turbine for the Simon Bolivar hydropower plant in Venezuela (2008).
For small hydropower plants there are modular Francis turbines. Mini units have an output of 20-3 000 kW at a head of 10-150 m, small units of 0.5-30 MW operate at a head of up to 300 m. The shaft is horizontal or vertical, the runner is single or double flow, the casing is spiral or open. The runner is often mounted directly on the generator shaft, so a separate turbine shaft is not needed. Equipment for small plants is also supplied complete, on the water-to-wire principle.
Efficiency, output and cavitation resistance are confirmed by model tests in the manufacturer's laboratories, and these results form the basis of the guaranteed figures. The scope of supply includes the generator, the HIPASE-T governor with an oil pressure unit, and excitation and control systems. Replacement of runners and modernization of existing stations with an increase in output form a separate field.

Questions and answers
What heads and outputs are Francis turbines designed for?
Large turbines operate at a head of up to 700 m and an output of up to 800 MW per unit with efficiency above 96 %. For small hydropower plants there are units of 20-3 000 kW and 0.5-30 MW.
Which valves are supplied together with the turbine?
An integrated ring gate or a separate butterfly or spherical turbine inlet valve of the manufacturer's own production.
Is the turbine suitable for modernizing an existing hydropower plant?
Yes, the manufacturer replaces runners and modernizes existing stations with an increase in output. Efficiency, output and cavitation resistance are confirmed by model tests.
