Pelton: bucket-type hydro turbine up to 400 MW, head up to 1,800 m

Pelton is an impulse bucket hydro turbine for heads up to 1,800 m and unit outputs over 400 MW, with efficiency above 92 %. It is installed at high-head and diversion hydropower plants in mountain regions, mostly at stations with reservoirs. The manufacturer has supplied more than 1,300 large turbines of this type with a total output of about 65,000 MW.

Description

The manufacturer has been designing hydro turbines for over 180 years, and over 31,900 of its units with a total output of over 471,000 MW work worldwide. The overall range covers heads up to 1,800 m and outputs up to 800 MW per unit, and in the bucket (Pelton) type the manufacturer claims technological leadership. The range includes Pelton, Francis, Kaplan and bulb turbines as well as pump-turbines, and the machine type is selected for the head and output of the station. The Pelton turbine is practically not susceptible to cavitation.

The Pelton wheel works as an impulse turbine and extracts energy from the impulse of moving water. Water leaves the nozzles at high speed and strikes buckets arranged around the circumference of the runner. After the buckets the water falls into the tailwater, so the wheel rotates in air, not in the flow. The shaft is either horizontal with one or two nozzles per wheel, or vertical with up to six nozzles. The horizontal arrangement is easier to maintain, while the vertical one with several nozzles extracts more power from a single wheel. The flow is regulated by nozzle needles and deflectors, so efficiency stays high over the entire flow range. The deflector quickly diverts the jet from the wheel, while the needle closes slowly, and this limits water hammer in the penstock.

The manufacturer makes the runners with its own technologies to the customer's requirements. A fully forged runner is obtained by cutting the buckets out of a solid forged disc. In the HIWELD technology, cast or forged parts of the buckets are welded to the disc. In the MicroGuss method the buckets are deposited directly onto a forged disc. The manufacturing method is chosen together with the customer for a specific project.

For small hydropower plants modular Pelton turbines are produced. Mini units have an output of 100–5,000 kW for heads of 60–800 m, small units up to 30 MW work at heads of 50–1,000 m. Horizontal versions have 1–3 nozzles, vertical ones 1–6 nozzles. Flow in them is likewise regulated by needles and deflectors. These turbines also recover energy in reverse osmosis plants and water supply systems. The package includes a turbine inlet ball valve up to 200 bar, a HIPASE-T governor with an oil pressure unit, and the generator.
