HS1000 — tidal current turbine 1–1.5 MW

A horizontal-axis tidal current turbine with an output of 1 MW in the HS1000 version and 1.5 MW in commercial units. It is placed on the seabed in straits and estuaries, where it generates electricity from flood and ebb tidal currents.

Output
1 MW (HS1000), 1.5 MW (MeyGen units)
Rotor
horizontal-axis, blade pitch for variable speed
Orientation
nacelle yaw system — operation in flood and ebb
Current speed
up to 5 m/s and higher

Description

A sea current is slower than wind, but the density of seawater is more than 800 times higher than that of air. With the same swept rotor area, a flow at a speed of 2.5 m/s (5 knots) pushes on the blades about as hard as a steady wind of 350 km/h. The tide is predictable, so the generation schedule of the plant is known in advance. The economically accessible tidal energy resource in the world is estimated at more than 150 TWh per year.

The design has been proven on prototypes and is based on the developer's 15 years of experience in hydropower, wind power and the offshore oil and gas industry. The horizontal-axis rotor has a blade pitch mechanism for variable-speed operation, and the yaw system turns the nacelle so that the turbine takes the current in both flood and ebb. The control software sets the blade angle itself from the sensor data for maximum power in the specific flow.

The turbines are designed for the heaviest sea currents, up to 5 m/s and higher, and for depths from 35 to 100 m. On the seabed the unit is held by its own weight, by pins or by piles depending on the soil and the characteristics of the current. The turbines have a modular design, and the developer fits them into the customer's daily power system schedule, because generation by tide is calculated in advance.

A smaller prototype in Norway in 2004 became the world's first tidal turbine with a permanent grid connection and logged more than 17 000 hours. The pre-commercial 1 MW HS1000 was installed in 2011 at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC, Orkney, Scotland). It delivered more than 1 GWh to the grid, and in 2013 the turbine was certified by DNV. In 2014 the world's first commercial order was received for three 1.5 MW turbines for the MeyGen array in the Pentland Firth.

Applications are tidal power plants and turbine arrays in straits and estuaries. In Ukrainian conditions the equipment has little applicability, but it belongs to the manufacturer's hydropower equipment profile alongside turbines for hydropower and pumped-storage plants.

Questions and answers

What current speed and depth is the turbine designed for?

Currents of up to 5 m/s and higher and depths of up to 100 m. The unit is held on the seabed by its own weight, by pins or by piles.

Is there experience of HS1000 operation on the grid?

Yes, the 1 MW HS1000 was installed in 2011 at the EMEC centre in Orkney and delivered more than 1 GWh to the grid. In 2013 the turbine was certified by DNV.

How does the turbine work when the current direction changes?

The yaw system turns the nacelle, so the turbine works in both flood and ebb. The software sets the pitch angle of the blades from sensor data.
