TX-6 three-casing steam turbine with four-flow exhaust up to 800 MW

TX-6 is a tandem steam turbine rated up to 800 MW with three casings, designed for supercritical steam conditions. A reverse-flow high- and intermediate-pressure (HIP) cylinder works together with two double-flow LP cylinders, giving a four-flow exhaust. The turbine is used in high-output combined-cycle plants and in coal- and gas-fired steam turbine units.

Description

For TX-6 the series page gives main steam pressure up to 251 bar(a) (3,640 psia), while the manufacturer's 2024 catalog gives up to 271 bar(a). Main steam temperature is up to 600 °C, reheat up to 620 °C. The turbine is built for 50 or 60 Hz. In the reverse-flow HIP cylinder the steam in the high- and intermediate-pressure sections flows in opposite directions, and the axial forces on the rotor are partly balanced. For a specific unit the parameters are clarified according to the technical specification.

LP exhaust can be directed downward or sideways, and this choice gives extra freedom in plant layout. High efficiency, at the level of the best in its class, is attributed by the manufacturer to an optimized flow path and improved seals. Supercritical steam conditions raise cycle efficiency compared with subcritical units. Start-up time is short and start-up modes are flexible, so the turbine also suits units that change load often.

The combined operating experience of the TX-6 fleet exceeds 2.5 million hours. Deliveries include the JERA Nishi-Nagoya power plant in Japan. Typical sites include the steam section of high-output combined-cycle plants, as well as conventional coal- and gas-fired steam turbine units of high output. In a combined-cycle plant the steam turbine runs on steam from the heat recovery boilers of the gas turbines, so it must tolerate load changes well together with them. The manufacturer determines the dimensions of the unit for each project separately. Between the two-casing TX-4 and the four-casing TX-8, this series occupies the middle of the range.

The manufacturer has built steam turbines since 1927. By December 2023 it had delivered 2,038 units with a total output of 217,652 MW. The turbines are built at plants in Yokohama (Japan) and Chennai (India). In North America the company ranks first among suppliers of steam turbine units from 200 MW, and the first delivery there took place in 1967. In this market the turbines are supplied by the manufacturer's American subsidiary.

The scope of supply includes a turbine generator and the D-EHC digital control system with start-up optimized according to rotor thermal stress. The manufacturer's turbine units operate significantly longer than the expected 20 years, and one unit in Australia has shown 99.6 % reliability. The company also provides service, repair and upgrades of turbines and generators.
