TX-4 steam turbine with double-flow LP cylinder 130–700 MW

TX-4 is a tandem reheat steam turbine rated from 130 to 700 MW, designed for supercritical steam conditions. Two casings house a combined high- and intermediate-pressure (HIP) cylinder and a double-flow LP cylinder. The turbine is installed in coal- and gas/oil-fired units, in the steam section of large combined-cycle plants and in power plant upgrades.

Description

TX-4 covers the widest output range in the TX line. A combined HIP cylinder and one double-flow LP cylinder make it possible to use two casings even at about 700 MW. LP exhaust is downward or sideways, and the sideways version gives extra freedom in turbine hall layout. According to the manufacturer, more than 170 turbines of the TX-4 series are installed worldwide.

Main steam pressure reaches 251 bar(a) (3,640 psia), so the turbine operates at supercritical conditions. Main steam temperature is up to 600 °C, reheat up to 620 °C (1,148 °F), grid frequency 50 or 60 Hz. Supercritical conditions raise cycle efficiency and reduce fuel consumption compared with subcritical units, while reheat lowers steam wetness in the last LP stages. The manufacturer attributes the high efficiency to an optimized flow path and improved seals. Start-up time is short, start-up modes are flexible and unit availability is at the level of the best in its class.

Applications include coal- and gas/oil-fired steam turbine units and the steam section of large combined-cycle plants. A separate area is the upgrade of operating power plants, where an old turbine is replaced with a supercritical TX-4. The compactness of the two-casing arrangement eases such replacement, because the shaft line is shorter than in three-casing machines of the same output. At the lower end of the range TX-4 is considered alongside TX-2, at the upper end alongside TX-6. The dimensions of the unit are determined for each project.

The manufacturer has built steam turbines since 1927, and by December 2023, according to the manufacturer, had delivered 2,038 units with a total output of 217,652 MW. They are built at plants in Yokohama (Japan) and Chennai (India). In North America the company is the largest supplier of steam turbine units from 200 MW, and the first delivery to this market took place in 1967. There the turbines are supplied by the manufacturer's American subsidiary.

The turbine is equipped with a turbine generator and the D-EHC digital control system, which manages start-up with rotor thermal stress taken into account. The service life of the manufacturer's turbine units significantly exceeds the expected 20 years, and the reliability of one unit in Australia was 99.6 %. The company also provides service, repair and upgrades of turbines and generators.
