TX-2G two-casing geared steam turbine up to 220 MW

TX-2G is a two-casing geared steam turbine rated up to 220 MW. A high-speed modular high-pressure cylinder is connected through a reduction gear to the intermediate/low-pressure (IP/LP) cylinder. The turbine starts quickly and responds quickly to load changes, so it is installed in load-following units in power systems with a large share of solar and wind plants.

Description

The TX-2G arrangement differs from a classic tandem turbine. The high-speed high-pressure cylinder works through a reduction gear, and the intermediate/low-pressure cylinder (IP/LP) rotates at grid frequency. The gear reduces the rotor speed of the high-pressure section to 3,000 rpm for a 50 Hz grid or 3,600 rpm for 60 Hz. High speed allows the HP cylinder to be made compact without loss of efficiency, so the turbine hall takes less area and construction costs less. The modular design of the HP cylinder simplifies manufacture and installation.

Main steam pressure reaches 170 bar(a) (2,466 psia), main steam and reheat steam temperature up to 585 °C. Unit output is up to 220 MW, grid frequency 50 or 60 Hz. The exhaust is single-flow, directed downward or axially, and in this form the turbine retains high efficiency.

Short start-up time, flexible start-up modes and fast response to load changes make TX-2G suitable for operation alongside the variable output of solar and wind plants. When solar and wind output falls, the unit quickly picks up load, and when it rises, it sheds it just as quickly. Typical sites include load-following steam turbine and combined-cycle units, plants in power systems with a high share of renewables and industrial power plants. The manufacturer ranks unit availability among the highest in its class, and dimensions are determined for each project.

The manufacturer has built steam turbines since 1927, and by December 2023, according to the manufacturer, 2,038 units with a total output of 217,652 MW had been delivered. The turbines are built at plants in Yokohama (Japan) and Chennai (India). In North America the company is the largest supplier of steam turbine units from 200 MW, the first delivery there took place in 1967, and in this market the company is represented by its American subsidiary.

A turbine generator and the D-EHC digital control system, which optimizes start-up according to rotor thermal stress, are supplied with the turbine. For a load-following unit this shortens the time to reach load without exceeding permissible rotor stresses. The service life of the manufacturer's turbine units significantly exceeds the expected 20 years, and one unit in Australia has shown 99.6 % reliability. The company also provides service, repair and upgrades of turbines and generators.

Questions and answers

Why does the TX-2G turbine have a reduction gear?

The gear reduces the speed of the high-speed high-pressure rotor to 3,000 rpm (50 Hz) or 3,600 rpm (60 Hz). The high-speed HP cylinder turns out compact without loss of efficiency.

What steam conditions does TX-2G allow?

Main steam pressure up to 170 bar(a), main steam and reheat temperature up to 585 °C. Unit output is up to 220 MW.

What kinds of plants is TX-2G suited to?

Load-following steam turbine and combined-cycle units, industrial power plants and power systems with a large share of solar and wind plants. These need fast start-up and fast response to load changes.
