TX-2 two-casing steam turbine with single-flow LP section up to 300 MW

TX-2 is a tandem two-casing reheat steam turbine rated up to 300 MW. The first casing houses the high- and intermediate-pressure sections (HIP), the second holds a single-flow low-pressure cylinder. The turbine is installed in steam turbine units of thermal power plants and in the steam section of medium-output combined-cycle plants.

Description

Both TX-2 casings sit on one shaft line in a tandem arrangement. The cylinders and the generator are in line on the shaft, and the combined HIP casing shortens the shaft line and reduces the number of bearings. Steam leaving the high-pressure section goes to reheat and returns to the intermediate-pressure section of the same casing, then enters the single-flow LP cylinder. Main steam pressure reaches 175 bar(a) (2,538 psia), main steam and reheat temperature up to 600 °C (1,112 °F). The turbine runs on a 50 or 60 Hz grid.

The exhaust is downward or axial. The axial version lowers the centreline height of the unit, which reduces building volume and the cost of constructing the turbine hall. For a new unit this means a lower foundation and a smaller building. The manufacturer determines the dimensions of the unit and foundation for each project. The single-flow exhaust combined with a high-performance flow path gives high efficiency.

Start-up is short and there are several start-up modes, so TX-2 suits load-following operation with frequent starts and load changes. The manufacturer ranks unit availability among the highest in its class. Reheat raises cycle efficiency and lowers steam wetness in the last LP stages, and with it blade erosion. The turbine is used in steam turbine units of thermal power plants and in the steam section of medium-output combined-cycle plants. For larger units the range includes the double-flow TX-4, for smaller ones the single-casing TX-1 and the geared TX-2G.

The manufacturer has built steam turbines since 1927. By December 2023, according to the manufacturer, 2,038 units with a total output of 217,652 MW had been delivered. Production is located at the manufacturer's plant in Yokohama (Japan) and at a joint venture in Chennai (India). In North America, where the first delivery took place in 1967, the company leads among suppliers of steam turbine units from 200 MW.

The turbine is supplied together with a turbine generator and the D-EHC digital control system, which optimizes start-up according to rotor thermal stress. The service life of the manufacturer's turbine units significantly exceeds the expected 20 years, and one unit in Australia has shown 99.6 % reliability. The company also provides service, repair and upgrades of turbines and generators.

Questions and answers

What steam conditions does the TX-2 turbine allow?

Main steam pressure up to 175 bar(a), main steam and reheat temperature up to 600 °C. Grid frequency 50 or 60 Hz.

What exhaust options are available?

Downward or axial exhaust. The axial one lowers the unit centreline height and the building volume of the turbine hall.

What facilities is TX-2 suited to?

Steam turbine units of thermal power plants and the steam section of combined-cycle plants up to 300 MW, including load-following operation.
