Hydro plant turbine inlet valves, spherical and biplane disc types

Turbine inlet valves for penstocks of hydro and pumped storage plants of two types, spherical and two-blade disc. Spherical valves are fitted to high-head turbines and pump-turbines, with a supply example of 260 MW. The design is selected for each plant.

Description

Turbine inlet valves are installed on the penstock before the spiral case of the turbine or pump-turbine. They shut off the water supply when the unit is stopped, during repair and in emergency modes, protect the turbine and reduce leakage through the guide vane apparatus.

The manufacturer produces two main types of valves. Two-blade disc valves (biplane) are the most widespread type of hydro plant inlet valves: a disc made of two skins has the required rigidity with moderate head losses. Spherical valves are fitted mainly to high-head turbines and pump-turbines. In the open position the flow section fully matches the penstock, so hydraulic losses are minimal, and the seal withstands high pressure.

The design is selected for the parameters of each plant, in particular the penstock diameter, head, closing modes and drive requirements. The manufacturer designs and makes the valves itself, verifying them through many years of operation. There is no standard size range for all plants, so each valve is agreed with the turbine and penstock design.

The valve works together with the guide vane apparatus. When the unit is stopped, the apparatus is closed, and the valve additionally shuts off the penstock so that water does not seep through leaks in the vanes. The choice of type depends on the turbine head, closing modes and the plant's drive requirements. An example of supply is a spherical valve for the Purulia pumped storage plant in India rated 260 MW, which gives an idea of the scale of plants for which valves are designed individually. Valves are needed at new hydro and pumped storage plants, and also in plant reconstruction, when an obsolete valve is replaced. They can be ordered separately or in a complete supply together with the turbine, hydro generator and control system.

The manufacturer also supplies Francis, Kaplan, Pelton, Deriaz and Bulb turbines, hydro generators for hydro and pumped storage plants with constant and adjustable rotational speed, digital protection relays and auxiliary equipment. So the valve can be agreed with the rest of the plant equipment in one project, and auxiliary systems are offered as a package based on the overall plant scheme. The manufacturer also designs hydro generators for the rating and rotational speed of a particular plant, so the set turns out matched.
