Description
The manufacturer regards hydraulic machines for pumped storage plants as the only technically proven and economical technology for large-scale long-term energy storage. The first pumped storage plant in Germany in this line appeared in 1908 (the test basin of the laboratory), and in 1937 the first large single-stage pump-turbine was built. Today about 200 pump-turbines with a total output of more than 25 000 MW and more than 450 pumped storage units with a total output of more than 60 000 MW are installed worldwide. The motor-generators for Bath County (USA) were supplied in 1976, and the high-speed motor-generators for Guangzhou II (China) in 2000.
A reversible pump-turbine together with a motor-generator operates as a turbine or as a pump depending on the direction of rotation, and the compact machine hall saves equipment and construction costs. With a wide range of specific speeds, pump-turbines are installed at heads from less than 50 to more than 800 m and single-unit outputs from less than 10 to more than 500 MW; for large projects, up to 500 MW and 700 m head. The guide apparatus can be fixed or adjustable. Variable speed (a doubly fed motor-generator or a synchronous machine with a converter) widens the operating range of the turbine and makes it possible to adjust power in pump mode.
A ternary unit consists of a motor-generator, a separate turbine (usually Francis or Pelton) and a storage pump on a common shaft. The direction of rotation is the same in both modes, and the change between modes is made through a clutch engaged at standstill, a starting turbine or a synchronizing torque converter with a very short switching time. The hydraulic short-circuit scheme makes it possible to adjust power in pump mode from 0 to 100 %. Storage pumps are mostly radial, single- or double-flow, single- and multi-stage. A torque converter filled with service water connects the pump to the shaft within seconds without load shocks in the grid.
Pump-turbine references: Goldisthal, Limberg II, Frades II, Ingula, Bath County, Guangzhou II, Rodund II (variable speed), Venda Nova, La Muela II, Tai An, Snowy 2.0, and the multi-stage Edolo and Chiotas. They are supplied together with valves, torque converters and clutches of the manufacturer's own production.

Questions and answers
What heads and outputs are reversible pump-turbines suitable for?
Head from less than 50 to more than 800 m, single-unit output from less than 10 to more than 500 MW. For large projects this is up to 500 MW and 700 m head.
How does a ternary unit differ from a reversible pump-turbine?
A ternary unit has a separate turbine (usually Francis or Pelton), a storage pump and a motor-generator on a common shaft. The direction of rotation is the same in both modes, and the change is made by a clutch, a starting turbine or a torque converter.
Can power be adjusted in pump mode?
Yes, variable speed widens the operating range and makes it possible to adjust power in pump mode. In ternary units this is done by the hydraulic short-circuit scheme within the range of 0 to 100 %.
