Reversible pump-turbine and ternary unit for pumped-storage plants
Reversible pump-turbines and ternary units for pumped-storage power plants, mostly based on the Francis design. In off-peak hours the unit pumps water to the upper reservoir, and in peak hours it works as an ordinary hydro turbine. The manufacturer has supplied more than 550 pumped-storage units with a total output of almost 40 000 MW.

Description
The manufacturer regards pumped storage as the most economical way of long-term storage of large amounts of energy. The plant balances renewable energy sources, relieves grid congestion, responds quickly to load changes, and gives the grid inertia and black start. Fast switching between generation and storage is also suitable for stabilizing frequency fluctuations. The manufacturer has worked in this field for more than 90 years, and in 1929 supplied equipment for the world's first commercial pumped-storage plant in Germany.
Pump-turbines are designed for a specific plant. They can be horizontal or vertical, single-stage or multistage, with constant or variable speed, with or without a cylindrical ring gate, and with individual or group drive of the guide vanes. The manufacturer carries out design, manufacture, supply, installation, commissioning and service.
The brochure describes three basic schemes. A reversible pump-turbine with a constant-speed motor-generator gives full flexibility in turbine mode, while in pump mode it is only switched on or off. When a group of units, usually 4–6, operates in parallel, the flow and power in pump mode are changed in steps. A ternary unit consists of a separate turbine, pump and constant-speed motor-generator. It is flexible in both modes and switches over in a few seconds, and with the optional hydraulic short circuit it regulates flow and power in both pump and turbine mode. A reversible pump-turbine with a variable-speed motor-generator regulates power continuously in both modes and gives the grid additional services, including virtual inertia.
Examples in the brochure include the world's first variable-speed units outside Japan at the Goldisthal pumped-storage plant and two variable-speed units of 330 MVA each for the world's largest pumped-storage plant. Earlier there were the storage pumps of the Provvidenza (Italy, 1949) and Limberg (Austria, 1954) plants. For the Hatta pumped-storage plant in the Hajar mountains 140 km from Dubai, a powerhouse in a shaft with two units of 125 MW each was chosen. They deliver 250 MW over a six-hour generation cycle, pumping takes a 7.4-hour cycle, and the stored energy is about 1.5 thousand MWh.
Applications are new pumped-storage plants, extension and modernization of plants, and hybrid complexes with solar and wind plants. The scope of supply usually includes a motor-generator, inlet ball valves, a HIPASE-T governor and protection with SFC functions.

Questions and answers
Which unit scheme should be chosen for power regulation in pump mode?
Continuous regulation in both modes is provided by a reversible pump-turbine with a variable-speed motor-generator. A ternary unit with a hydraulic short circuit also regulates flow and power in pump mode and switches over in a few seconds.
What is the manufacturer's experience in pumped-storage equipment?
More than 90 years of work and more than 550 pumped-storage units with a total output of almost 40 000 MW. The references include the Goldisthal plant with variable-speed units.
What is included in the scope of supply for a pumped-storage plant?
Pump-turbine, motor-generator, inlet ball valves, HIPASE-T governor and protection with SFC functions. The manufacturer also performs installation, commissioning and service.
