Pump-turbines and variable-speed pumped storage systems
Reversible pump-turbines, motor-generators and control systems for fixed- and variable-speed pumped storage power plants. The machine works as a turbine in generating mode and as a pump when water is pumped into the upper reservoir. The manufacturer supplied its first variable-speed pumped storage system in 1990.

Description
According to the manufacturer, it has world-class experience and technology in pumped storage generation. The industry is moving toward higher heads, larger unit ratings and variable speed, and the company develops its pumped storage equipment to meet these requirements. The scope includes the pump-turbine, the motor-generator and the control system. When the grid has surplus generation, the plant pumps water uphill, and at peak load hours it draws it down through the same machine.
On a pump-turbine the manufacturer was the first in the world to apply the splitter runner, in which long and short blades alternate. This geometry raises efficiency in generating and pumping modes, as well as operating stability and plant performance. The flow path is developed in the company's own hydraulic laboratory on models and by flow calculations.
The variable-speed system, according to the company the first in the world, was supplied for unit 2 of the Yagisawa pumped storage plant (Tokyo Electric Power Company). Changing the pump-turbine speed makes it possible to fine-tune the balance of generation and consumption. In pumping mode automatic frequency control (AFC) is possible, which is not available to fixed-speed machines. The operating range is widened and efficiency grows in both modes, and the unit supports grid voltage and improves power system stability.
After the effectiveness of the AFC system was confirmed, such plants have been built and are being designed in Japan and abroad. The equipment is supplied for new pumped storage plants, for upgrading operating plants by converting units to variable speed, and for power systems that integrate solar and wind generation.
The manufacturer has built hydro turbines and hydro generators for almost 120 years at two plants of its own. Together with the main machines the company supplies auxiliary systems and takes on procurement, installation, testing and commissioning on a turnkey basis.

Questions and answers
What does variable speed give a pumped storage pump-turbine?
In pumping mode automatic frequency control (AFC) becomes available, which fixed-speed machines do not have. Efficiency grows, the operating range widens and the unit supports grid voltage.
What is special about the splitter runner?
Long and short blades alternate in it. This raises efficiency in generating and pumping modes and the operating stability of the plant.
Can an operating pumped storage plant be converted to variable speed?
Yes, the manufacturer upgrades operating plants by converting units to variable speed. The company supplied the first such system in 1990 for unit 2 of the Yagisawa plant.
