Description

Besides radial-axial and diagonal machines, the manufacturer builds Pelton bucket turbines for high heads, as well as axial adjustable-blade Kaplan turbines and bulb-type Bulb turbines for low heads. The machine type is chosen for the head and flow of the plant, and each turbine is designed individually. The characteristics and efficiency are verified on the manufacturer's own model test stand.

A Pelton bucket turbine converts the kinetic energy of the jet leaving the nozzles into rotation of the runner. Particle-method calculation is used to optimise the buckets. It makes it possible to analyse the flow leaving the bucket, which is hard to observe on a model. The parent companies have built Pelton turbines for more than a hundred years. In 1912 a horizontal Pelton turbine with a 250 kVA generator was started, and in 1961 a 95 MW Pelton turbine (300/360 rpm) for the Kurobegawa No.4 plant, at that time the most powerful Pelton turbine in Japan.

Adjustable-blade Kaplan turbines are used at low- and medium-head hydro plants. Bulb turbines are installed at run-of-river plants with small heads, where the generator is placed in a bulb directly in the flow path. An example of supply is the Nam Ngiep 1 re-regulation plant in Laos, where a bulb turbine works with an 18.79 MW / 21,500 kVA generator at 142.9 rpm.

The flow path is calculated with CFD methods, Pelton buckets are additionally checked by particle-method calculation, and the result is confirmed by model tests. Auxiliary equipment (excitation transformers, generator circuit breakers, isolated phase busducts, disconnectors, station service transformers, distribution panels) is offered by the manufacturer as a package based on the overall plant design.

Pelton, Kaplan and Bulb turbines belong to the same line as the Francis and Deriaz turbines, so for a plant the options are compared by head and flow and the suitable machine is selected. The manufacturer can supply the generator, excitation system, protection and control together with the turbine. Runners are also designed separately, so in modernisation a worn runner is replaced with a new one for the required head. Applications: high-head diversion hydro plants (Pelton), run-of-river and low-head plants on large rivers (Kaplan, Bulb), replacement of worn runners during modernisation.
