Description

Pelton (impulse) hydro turbines are intended for high-head hydropower plants in mountainous regions, where the head is measured in hundreds of metres. They are made by a plant in Harbin (China), one of three power engineering plants founded in the city in 1951. According to the manufacturer, the large hydro units of this plant account for about half of the installed hydropower capacity in China, and its hydro equipment in total has been supplied to 369 stations with a combined capacity of 134 GW.

According to the group website, the only series of large high-head Pelton units of the 500 MW class in China has been mastered. The website of the subsidiary states a maximum unit output of 800 MW as the largest in the world, a head range of 184–843 m (up to 941.5 m on the overview page), and 68 units supplied to 30–31 power plants. These discrepancies must be clarified with the manufacturer.

Heads are measured in hundreds of metres, so this type is used in mountainous regions rather than on lowland rivers. Large units are built with several nozzles, so the output is shared between several jets. The principle of operation is as follows. The turbine converts the energy of high-velocity jets leaving the nozzles on a solid runner with buckets. Output is controlled by the needle valves of the nozzles and by jet deflectors. For large multi-nozzle units, the decisive factor is the technology for making a runner of large mass and strength, which the manufacturer develops within its high-head unit programme.

The turbines are supplied as part of hydro units with generators, excitation systems, governors and auxiliary equipment. The number of nozzles and the rotational speeds are not stated in the available materials.
