Pelton turbines 12–150 MW, head 300–1200 m

Pelton (impulse) turbines are intended for high-head hydropower plants in mountain regions. Heads from 300 to 1200 m, and the general product list gives a power of 12–150 MW. Two 140 MW units for the Jinwo plant are the largest Pelton units in Asia by unit power.

Description

Hydropower is historically the manufacturer’s core business, and the enterprise was founded in 1958 in Deyang as a hydropower equipment plant. The manufacturer has a national hydraulic laboratory, test benches for model testing of turbines and thrust bearings, and its own calculation and design centre.

According to the manufacturer, Pelton units are designed for heads from 300 to 1200 m. The power range of 12–150 MW is taken from the general product list. Among the sites, apart from the Jinwo plant on the Tianwan river cascade, there is the Renzonghai plant with a power of 120 MW. The main component of such a turbine is a solid runner with buckets, acted on by high-speed jets from the nozzles.

In 2023 the manufacturer made China’s first domestically developed 150 MW class runner and localised the technology of high-power high-head units. The hydraulic model of Jinwo passed acceptance tests. The technical data of this runner were opened for scientific research under a 2024 project, and development of a 500 MW Pelton unit continues.

The turbines are supplied as part of hydro units with generators, governors and excitation systems. Production is located in Deyang (Sichuan, China). The number of nozzles and rotational speeds are not given in the available materials, and they are provided on request for a specific project.

For comparison, the manufacturer’s Francis turbines work at heads of 40–500 m, and bulb units at heads of 7–30 m. The Pelton arrangement occupies the upper part of the head range, where small water flows are needed at a large head difference. Water from the penstock is accelerated in the nozzles to high speed, and the buckets on the rim of the runner convert the energy of the jet into shaft rotation. The runner with buckets is made solid, which is important at such jet speeds. For pumped-storage plants, the manufacturer separately offers reversible units for heads of 50–850 m with a power of 10–450 MW, and contracts have been signed for 60 units. These data are given from the manufacturer’s materials. The parameters of a specific unit are determined by the head and water flow at the site. The number of nozzles and the number of buckets are also set for a specific project.
