Description

Pelton impulse turbines are used at high-head hydro plants with relatively small flows, in mountain regions and at diversion plants. The manufacturer built its first Pelton turbine in 1903, and thousands of such machines have been supplied since, including large and powerful units. A Pelton turbine performs well at partial load and has high efficiency over a wide flow range.

The flow in an impulse turbine is one of the most difficult problems in hydraulic modelling. The interaction of the jet with the moving buckets is completely unsteady, and the formation of the free jet and the flow in the bucket are determined by a two-phase system of water and air. The manufacturer's numerical simulation group has solved this problem, the calculation results agree well with experiment and formed the basis for new bucket profiles. The Pelton model test rig in Heidenheim was modernized in 2008. Runners are made fully milled from a solid forging (St. Pölten) or from a forged disc with welded-on buckets (São Paulo).

Technical capabilities for large hydro plants: output up to 300 MW, head up to 1500 m, runner diameter up to 5 m. For small hydro plants, horizontal and vertical turbines with 1–6 nozzles are offered, with internal and external needle regulation and a cantilever, 2-, 3- or 4-bearing unit layout. The range extends to 1000 m head and 30 MW, with standard sizes up to 700 m and 10 MW. The manufacturer developed the first horizontal six-nozzle Pelton turbine, on which engineers worked for more than 10 years.

Applications are high-head hydro plants, pumped storage plants with ternary units, and modernization.
