Description

Partially expanded steam returns to the boiler, is reheated and enters the turbine again, which raises the cycle efficiency. Steam turbines are at the origin of the company. It was founded in 1853, the first steam turbine was built at the Genoa works in 1912, and about 700 steam machines with a combined output of almost 100 GW have been supplied in total.

The range covers machines from two to five cylinders, both series being of the reaction type. The choice of layout depends on the required unit output. For smaller outputs there is the two-cylinder MT15 with a single-flow exhaust, for larger ones the RT30 with separate HP and IP cylinders and one or more double-flow LP cylinders. The MT15 series is rated 100–300 MW and serves medium combined-cycle, steam-turbine, cogeneration and solar plants, with steam parameters up to 170 bar and 600/585 °C. The RT30 series, 150–1000 MW, is intended for large combined-cycle plants and steam power units, with steam pressure up to 280 bar, temperature 600/620 °C and three or more cylinders.

Each model is assembled from pre-engineered, proven modules of different sizes for 50 and 60 Hz markets, so design and manufacture take less time. All models except the large LP cylinders are assembled at the works, while the largest LP cylinders are shipped separately and assembled on site. The rotating and stationary blades are three-dimensional, reaction type, machined from bar stock so that the profile is made in one piece with the root and shroud. Shroud rings on the inner casing of the HP cylinder give a compact, uniform shape and with it high thermal flexibility and cycling capability.

The layout is single-bearing: one bearing stands between adjacent cylinders, and the bearings rest directly on the foundation. The rotor behaves stably and the machine is compact. The rotors are welded, which gives thermal flexibility and freedom in the choice of materials. The exhaust is axial or downward for single-flow design and lateral or downward for double-flow design. In single-shaft combined-cycle plants the turbine is connected to the generator by an SSS self-synchronizing clutch, and the gas and steam turbines can be operated independently. MT/RT modules are also used in steam turbine plants for small modular reactors rated 100–800 MW.

Questions and answers

How do the MT15 and RT30 series differ?

MT15 has two cylinders with a single-flow exhaust and an output of 100–300 MW, with steam up to 170 bar and 600/585 °C. RT30 has three or more cylinders with double-flow LP cylinders, 150–1000 MW, up to 280 bar and 600/620 °C.

Which plants are these reheat steam turbines suited for?

Combined-cycle plants with class F and H gas turbines, coal units with supercritical and ultra-supercritical parameters, cogeneration and solar thermal plants. MT/RT modules are also used for small modular reactors rated 100–800 MW.

How is the steam turbine connected to the generator in a single-shaft combined-cycle plant?

Through an SSS self-synchronizing clutch. It allows the gas and steam turbines to be operated independently of each other.
