Description
Large steam turbines are intended for large coal-fired power plants and combined-cycle plants. They are built with ratings up to 1000 MW in three- and four-cylinder versions. These are condensing turbines with steam reheat. They are assembled from proven modules, namely high-, intermediate- and low-pressure cylinders (HP + IP + LP) or a combined HP/IP cylinder and an LP cylinder.
The exhaust to the condenser is directed downward or sideways. The rotor turns at 3000 rpm in 50 Hz grids and 3600 rpm in 60 Hz grids. The modular layout makes it possible to take cylinders of already proven designs for different units. The flow path uses reaction blades with a solid-milled shroud, and twisted and three-dimensional (3DS) profiles. The LP cylinder has free-standing long blades, each of which is individually tuned away from resonances. For sliding-pressure operation, full-arc steam admission is used, and for constant-pressure operation, nozzle governing, which improves efficiency at partial loads. The steam admission method is chosen for the plant mode, sliding or constant pressure.
The double casing of the HP and IP cylinders and the triple casing of the LP cylinder reduce thermal stresses and deformations during starts and sharp load changes. The drum rotor has high vibration stability, and the bearing supports are separated from the casing, so casing deformation has less effect on shaft vibration. Single-point-support bearings are tolerant of uneven foundation settlement.
The turbines are designed for weekly and daily start-stop cycles, high rates and cycles of load change, and long operation in the frequency range from −5 to +3 % of nominal. Start-up, loading, shutdown and valve tests under load are performed automatically by a digital governor. A thermal stress evaluation system monitors turbine life consumption during starts.
Examples of deliveries are Noshiro Unit 1 of Tohoku Electric Power (a four-cylinder 600 MW turbine with a 670 MVA generator) and Miyazu Unit 2 of Kansai Electric Power (375 MW, 420 MVA). The manufacturer has built steam turbines and generators since 1959 and carries out the full cycle from design and manufacture to installation, commissioning and service.
