Description
Axial (Kaplan, adjustable-blade) hydro units are intended for low- and medium-head run-of-river and dam-toe HPPs with large and variable water flows. They are manufactured by the works in Harbin (China), one of three power engineering works founded in the city in 1951. According to the manufacturer, the large hydro units of this works account for about half of the installed capacity of China's hydropower plants. In total, hydro equipment has been supplied to 369 stations with a total capacity of 134 GW.
Axial units are produced for heads from 1.4 to 78 m, that is, for both low-head and medium-head stations. Typical applications cover run-of-river HPPs with large water flows and dam-toe stations with variable head. The maximum unit rating is 230 MW according to the enterprise website, and 235 MW is stated on the product page. According to the manufacturer, this is the highest rating in the world for units of this type. The runner diameter reaches 10.4 m. 182 axial units have been supplied to 66 power plants.
The runner blades are adjustable and are controlled in coordination with the wicket gates through the governor. For this reason the unit keeps a high efficiency as head and load change. This matters for HPPs on lowland rivers and in cascades, where water flow varies during the year.
Axial turbines are supplied complete with hydrogenerators, excitation systems, governors and oil pressure units of own manufacture. The manufacturer also carries out reconstruction of existing units. The available materials contain no rotational speeds or numbers of blades for individual units, and these data must be requested for a specific project.
