Description
Hydro turbines, reversible pump-turbines, hydro generators and motor-generators, as well as instrumentation and control systems (I&C) for large hydro and pumped storage plants, are made and supplied by the only manufacturer in the Republic of Korea with the full set of technologies and capacities for this main equipment. Pumped storage plants work in turbine and pump modes, so they need reversible pump-turbines and motor-generators.
The production cycle is closed, from melting of metal, casting and forgings to finished turbines and generators. In this way the manufacturer controls material quality from melting to machining. The main components of a hydro unit are made in house: turbine runners, spiral casings, stay rings, stators and rotors of hydro generators, and shafts.
Starting with the supply of main equipment for the Gangneung hydro plant (2×41 MW), the manufacturer has taken part in all new projects and upgrades of hydro and pumped storage plants in Korea. These include the Muju (2×300 MW), Samnyangjin (2×300 MW), Sancheon (2×350 MW), Yangyang (4×250 MW) and Yecheon (2×400 MW) pumped storage plants. The line therefore covers reversible pumped storage units of 250–400 MW. In the grid, pumped storage plants work as accumulators, since at times of low load the units pump water into the upper reservoir, and at peaks they spend it through the turbines. Reversible units and motor-generators are therefore needed for balancing the power system.
In 2020 the manufacturer became the EPC contractor of the Upper Trishuli-1 hydro plant in Nepal, with supply of main equipment and overall construction of the station. Together with Korean energy companies and research organisations, localisation of hydro turbines and generators of 30 MW is under way. The company also targets foreign markets, in particular South-East and South-West Asia. The export direction rests on memoranda of cooperation with Korean energy companies.
Production is located in Changwon (Korea), where large components are made in one place from casting to assembly. Detailed rating data of the hydro units, including heads, rotational speeds and turbine types by specific speed, are determined by the project and are not given in the available materials.
