Hydropower turbine inlet valves: butterfly valves up to 6 000 mm, spherical valves up to 200 bar, cone valves
Butterfly, cone and spherical valves for hydropower and pumped-storage plants with diameters up to 6 000 mm and pressures up to 200 bar. They are installed for safety, maintenance and unit shutoff, and also to regulate flow and pressure. The valves are designed and built in the manufacturer's own workshops.

Description
Butterfly valves up to 6 000 mm in diameter with a design pressure of 64 bar, cone valves up to 2 200 mm for the same 64 bar and spherical valves up to 3 300 mm for pressures up to 200 bar are already in service worldwide. The manufacturer has built valves for more than 100 years, and more than 4.5 thousand units are in operation. The machine tools of its workshops mill, turn, drill and polish parts up to 12 m in diameter and up to 320 t in weight.
A butterfly valve has a lenticular or lattice (flow-through) disc, the shape of which is developed on models for the lowest hydraulic loss coefficient. It is installed as an emergency protection, turbine inlet or pump valve at low and medium pressure. Opening and closing are oil-hydraulic, or closing is by weight and opening by hydraulics. The oil for a turbine inlet valve can come from the turbine governor's oil pressure unit. The seal is an adjustable rubber-metal type, and a lattice disc may also have a maintenance seal. Flow is possible in both directions.
Cone valves regulate flow from 0 to 100 %, dissipate flow energy, work on bottom outlets and as release valves. They are often installed together with an upstream protective gate, for example a butterfly valve, for maintenance and emergency shutoff. The valve passes large flows at high pressure, the drive is oil-hydraulic or electromechanical, and flow is in one direction.
A spherical valve has a fully free passage and therefore minimal head loss. It is installed as a high-pressure turbine inlet or pump valve, with controlled service and maintenance seals, and flow in both directions. It is operated by oil, by water pressure or in combination, when oil opens it and water closes it.
The scope of supply usually includes hydraulic and electrical control systems, a bypass, air and vacuum valves, a pipe rupture protection device and connecting pipes. References include Nurek (Tajikistan), Dinorwig (Wales), butterfly valves for Nant de Drance (Switzerland) and spherical valves for Thuong Kon Tum (Vietnam). To avoid unplanned outages, the manufacturer recommends regular overhauls with original spare parts.

Questions and answers
What are the limiting diameters and pressures of the valves?
Butterfly valves up to 6 000 mm and 64 bar, cone valves up to 2 200 mm and 64 bar, spherical valves up to 3 300 mm and 200 bar.
Which valve should be chosen for high head?
For high-head turbine inlet and pump applications a spherical valve is installed, with a free passage and minimal head loss. It has a service and a maintenance seal and works at pressures up to 200 bar.
Can a cone valve be used to regulate flow?
Yes, cone valves regulate flow from 0 to 100 % and dissipate flow energy. They are usually installed together with an upstream protective gate, for example a butterfly valve.
