GXP modular geothermal steam turbines (GXP-2B, GXP-2C, GXP-5C, GXP-X)

GXP is a series of modular impulse steam turbines for small and medium geothermal power plants. The series includes the back-pressure GXP-2B and the condensing GXP-2C, GXP-5C and GXP-X rated 10-20 MW. The skid design and a standard layout shorten plant construction time.

GXP-2B
back-pressure, single flash, 5-10 bar abs., 150-180 °C, 40-70 t/h
GXP-2C
condensing, 1.2-3.5 bar abs., 104-139 °C, 18-31 t/h
GXP-5C
condensing, 1.9-7.0 bar abs., 118-165 °C, 25-64 t/h
GXP-X

Description

The full range of geothermal turbines of the manufacturer includes single-, double-, triple- and four-flow machines for steam pressures from 30 to 430 psi. They are built for dry steam plants, single-, double- and triple-flash plants and for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). The modular GXP series covers the lower rating range, and the parameters below are given by the manufacturer as typical. Pressure in psi is quoted for the whole range, while for the modular machines the parameters are given in bar abs.

GXP-2B runs back-pressure on single-flash steam at 5-10 bar abs. and 150-180 °C, with steam flow of 40-70 t/h, and the plant occupies 16 × 19 m. The condensing GXP-2C is rated for 1.2-3.5 bar abs., 104-139 °C and 18-31 t/h over an area of 14 × 18 m. GXP-5C accepts 1.9-7.0 bar abs., 118-165 °C and 25-64 t/h, with an area of 28 × 26 m. GXP-X rated 10-20 MW corresponds to the typical range of conventional geothermal plants, runs on 7.4-9.3 bar abs., 167-177 °C and 80-160 t/h and occupies 60 × 40 m. Compared with GXP-5C, this turbine consumes less than twice the steam while producing more than twice the output.

The impulse flow path has high efficiency, is easier to maintain and is less prone to fouling by deposits. The casing has a horizontal split, the rotors are solid forged, there are fewer stages, the nozzles are wide-chord, the blade attachment is proven, and the casings and diaphragms are supported on the axis. The super-rotor technology with special materials and coatings resistant to corrosive steam components extends service life. Plants with such rotors have operated for 10 years and more longer without noticeable corrosion degradation.

The skid design and a standard layout speed up plant commissioning, a high-speed turbine reduces its footprint, and individual blocks are replaced during maintenance. The IoT monitoring and diagnostics system builds a thermal model of the plant and analyzes historical operating data to detect deviations in time and reduce unplanned outages. GXP turbines are installed at small and medium geothermal plants, wellhead units and in the expansion of operating plants.

Questions and answers

What steam parameters does GXP-X need?

Typically 7.4-9.3 bar abs., 167-177 °C and a flow of 80-160 t/h. The turbine is condensing, rated 10-20 MW.

How does GXP-2B differ from GXP-2C?

GXP-2B is back-pressure, at 5-10 bar abs. and 150-180 °C, while GXP-2C is condensing, at 1.2-3.5 bar abs. and 104-139 °C. GXP-2B has the higher output, and its plant occupies 16 × 19 m against 14 × 18 m.

How does the turbine resist corrosion by geothermal steam?

The super-rotor technology uses materials and coatings resistant to corrosive components. Plants with it have operated for 10 years and more longer without noticeable degradation.
