GT36 H-class gas turbine 563 MW with sequential combustion
The GT36 H-class gas turbine rated 563 MW for 50 Hz grids is the flagship of the manufacturer's sequential combustion line. It is installed in combined cycle plants up to 1605 MW and in peaking and standby units in power systems with a high share of renewables. The turbine runs on a mixture of natural gas with up to 70 % hydrogen.

Description
The turbine grew out of several generations of proven technology and the experience of GT26, and moved the company into the class of very large machines. The designers aimed at lower electricity cost and lower CO2 emissions, greater operating flexibility and simpler maintenance. The compressor is axial, 15-stage, with four stages of variable guide vanes. It is followed by sequential two-stage combustors and a four-stage air-cooled turbine. The rotor is a welded monolithic one, and the generator is driven from the cold end. Installation, operation and maintenance are simplified, maintenance intervals are extended and outages have become shorter.
The data are given for ISO conditions and 100 % methane. The output of 563 MW includes the OTC cooler, simple cycle efficiency is 43.0 %, frequency is 50 Hz, exhaust gas flow is 1065 kg/s and exhaust temperature is 630 °C. In a 1+1 combined cycle configuration the unit delivers 800 MW net at an efficiency of 62.6 %, and in a 2+1 configuration 1605 MW at an efficiency of 62.8 %. Heat rate is 5751 and 5732 kJ/kWh respectively.
Sequential combustion gives a large turndown depth and a wide operating window within emission limits. Minimum combined cycle load is 20 % for 1+1 and 10 % for 2+1, and parking mode is 10 % and 5 %. The turbine starts and picks up load quickly, keeps high efficiency at part load and a large power reserve at low fuel consumption, and has high fuel flexibility. NOx emissions are 25 ppm dry on gas, optionally down to 15 ppm.
Hydrogen burns fast and with a high flame temperature, so conventional combustors with a large hydrogen share produce a lot of NOx and risk flashback, and the output has to be reduced. In the GT36 two combustion stages follow one another, and the reduction of first-stage output is compensated by shifting fuel to the second stage. NOx does not rise and output does not fall. At present up to 70 % hydrogen in a mixture with natural gas is approved for operation, and development towards 100 % is under way. The turbine keeps high efficiency even with a large hydrogen share. References total 5 units. Service covers everything from one-off services to operation and maintenance contracts.
