GT — geothermal steam turbines 15–150 MW
GT series geothermal steam turbines rated 15–150 MW from the manufacturer, for power plants running on natural steam from geothermal fields. The impulse-type machines operate at steam pressure up to 20 bar in a medium with high moisture, salts and acids. The company supplies them together with geothermal turbogenerators and modernizes existing units.

Description
The company's first turbine sets on geothermal steam started up at Larderello (Italy) in 1911, at the plant regarded as the world's first geothermal power station. Geothermal steam has low parameters and an aggressive medium with high moisture, dissolved salts and acids. For this reason the GT turbines are built on impulse technology, with new-generation blade profiles and seals. The rotor and blades are made of special materials that reduce the effect of salt deposits and acid corrosion.
The series is rated 15–150 MW, with inlet steam pressure up to 20 bar and superheat up to 10 °C. The steam admission valves are of the throttle, rotary type. Last-stage blades 20 to 31 inches long are selected to match the steam characteristics of a particular field, and the choice is wide. Configurations range from one cylinder with a single-flow exhaust to two cylinders with a double-flow exhaust. Besides the traditional vertical downward exhaust to the condenser, upward, lateral and axial options are available, so the turbine hall is laid out to the customer's requirements. The machines are assembled from pre-engineered modules for 50 and 60 Hz markets.
Air-cooled turbogenerators in a geothermal design are supplied with the turbine, with materials resistant to humidity and hydrogen sulphide. The company builds geothermal power plants on a turnkey basis and modernizes existing geothermal turbines by replacing the flow path, and its own service team maintains them. The turbines operate at fields in Italy and other countries with volcanic activity.
At the Rancia 2 plant of Enel Green Power, a first-generation 20 MW turbine made by the company in the 1980s was replaced in 2012 with a third-generation unit. Longer last-stage blades added 1 MW (+5 %) at full load. This project was the first of six similar replacements of obsolete 20 MW turbine sets, not all of which were made by the company. At another Larderello plant, built in 2000, the company designed a reconstruction in 2016 on a double and triple flash scheme, and the output rose from 46 to 59 MW. In Indonesia, together with its partner PP.PT, a 30 MW unit at the Kamojang plant was restored in 12 months, the work was completed in December 2017, and the gross heat rate improved by 5.5 %.

Questions and answers
What steam parameters do the GT geothermal turbines allow?
Inlet steam pressure up to 20 bar and superheat up to 10 °C. The series is rated 15–150 MW.
How does a geothermal turbine withstand aggressive steam?
The rotor and blades are made of special materials resistant to salts and acids. The generator is supplied in a geothermal design resistant to humidity and hydrogen sulphide.
Does the company modernize existing geothermal turbines?
Yes, by replacing the flow path, including on machines of other manufacturers. At Rancia 2 a new 20 MW turbine with longer last-stage blades gave +1 MW at full load.
