Francis radial-axial hydro turbines for medium and high heads
Vertical Francis radial-axial hydro turbines for hydropower plants with medium and high heads, with delivered unit ratings from 3.3 to 730 MW. Each machine is designed for the head and flow of the plant and verified on a model. They suit new hydropower plants and equipment replacement at existing ones.

Description
Francis radial-axial turbines are the main type of hydro turbine for power plants with medium and high heads. Each machine is designed individually for the head and flow of a specific plant. The characteristics and the operating zone are confirmed by model tests on the manufacturer's own hydraulic test stand. There is no standard series, so the flow path geometry is fitted to the plant parameters, and the machine type is selected by head and flow.
The vertical turbine contains a spiral case, a stator (stay ring), a guide apparatus with adjustable vanes, a runner and a draft tube. The flow path is refined by full-scale CFD analysis from the spiral case inlet to the draft tube outlet. An unsteady two-phase calculation reproduces the vortex rope in the draft tube at the level of the model experiment.
The guide apparatus can be driven by hybrid or dual electric servomotors instead of a conventional oil pressure unit, and the bearings are water-lubricated with ceramic elements. The rating of the delivered units lies between 3.3 MW and 730 MW per unit.
According to the manufacturer, the unit at the Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower plant in Laos has 140.5 MW at 214 rpm, and the Chingshan plant in Taiwan has 96.13 MW at 360 rpm. The rebuilt Toya small hydropower plant runs 2 × 3.31 MW turbines, where the cooling water system and the oil pressure unit were dropped. The legacy of the founding companies includes 730 MW Francis turbines for the Guri II hydropower plant in Venezuela.
Applications are new hydropower plants and equipment replacement at existing stations under a scrap-and-build scheme, with higher output and efficiency, a wider operating zone, and less cavitation, vibration and noise thanks to a new runner. The turbine can be supplied together with the hydro generator, control system and auxiliary equipment as a single package. The total deliveries of the company and its founders are more than 2 100 hydro turbines with a combined rating of more than 93 000 MW, including more than 30 000 MW in Japan, more than 23 000 MW in Latin America, more than 20 000 MW in Asia and Oceania and more than 16 000 MW in North America.
