Description

Francis hydro units are the main type produced by the works in Harbin, one of three power engineering works founded in the city in 1951. According to the manufacturer, large hydro units account for about half of the installed capacity of China's hydropower plants, and hydro equipment has been supplied to 369 stations with a total capacity of 134 GW. The maximum unit rating of a turbine is 1000 MW, the largest unit in the world (Baihetan HPP). The head range is from 11.5 to 420 m, and the runner diameter is up to 10.44 m. 661 units have been supplied to 223 power plants, according to the manufacturer's website.

The manufacturer was the first in the world to produce a new generation of Francis turbines with an ultra-wide load zone and high stability. The units are able to operate continuously and safely over the whole power range from 0 to 100%. A hydro unit stops being a simple source of energy and becomes a tool for regulating the power system, which makes it easier to integrate wind and solar generation into the grid. 22 patents have been obtained for this technology, including 9 invention patents. Such an extension of the operating range plays a noticeable role in the grid absorbing renewable generation and in achieving carbon neutrality goals.

As a leading organisation of Chinese hydro turbine engineering, the manufacturer led the development of the international standard IEC 62882:2020. The standard fixed the similarity law for converting pressure pulsations in Francis turbines from model to prototype, and it is a similarity law recognised internationally. The manufacturer also took part in the revision of the national standard GB/T 15468-2020, Basic technical requirements for hydraulic turbines. These developments have scientific and practical value for the development of hydro units and the construction of hydropower plants in China and beyond.

For export the works built the runner of the 504 MW unit of the Tarbela-5 HPP (Pakistan), shipped in 2026. This is the largest hydro unit by rating supplied by China abroad. The turbines are supplied complete with hydrogenerators, governors, oil pressure units and excitation systems from the same manufacturer, and also for the modernisation of existing HPPs. Manufacturing is in Harbin (China).
