Description
Hydropower is historically the manufacturer’s core business, and the enterprise was founded in 1958 in Deyang as a hydropower equipment plant. The manufacturer designs and builds Francis hydro units for heads from 40 to 500 m and unit power from 10 to 1000 MW. According to the manufacturer, more than 500 such units have been supplied, of which 86 have a power of 500 MW and more.
The main milestones are as follows. In 2006 the first runner of its own design was shipped for the right-bank Three Gorges plant. In 2013 unit No. 13 of 770 MW was put into operation at the Xiluodu plant (the third most powerful hydropower plant in the world), and by 2014 all nine of the manufacturer’s units at this station. In 2019 the first 1000 MW runner was made for the Baihetan plant, and in 2021 the first 1000 MW units, the largest in the world by unit power, were commissioned. Hydro units were also supplied for the Gibe III plant (Ethiopia, 10 units) and many other sites in China and abroad.
Hydraulic profiles of the runners are developed on the basis of model tests in the company’s own national hydraulic laboratory. For the Baihetan plant, hydraulic design and model testing of the 1000 MW runner were carried out separately. In addition to the laboratory, the manufacturer has test benches for model testing of turbines and thrust bearings and its own calculation and design centre.
The turbines are supplied complete with a hydrogenerator, governor, excitation system and auxiliary systems, and also for modernisation of existing hydropower plants with runner replacement and uprating. Production is located in Deyang (Sichuan province, China). The products are exported to 48 countries, including Brazil, Venezuela, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Pakistan and Cambodia.
Alongside, the manufacturer’s programme includes bulb units of 6–80 MW for heads of 7–30 m, Kaplan units of 10–200 MW for heads of 10–50 m, Pelton units for heads of 300–1200 m, and reversible pumped-storage units for heads of 50–850 m with a power of 10–450 MW. Contracts for 60 units have been signed for pumped-storage plants.
