Description
Francis mixed-flow turbines are the main type of hydro turbine made by the manufacturer: they account for more than half of all the turbines it has built. The first Francis turbine was installed in 1873, and even then the design was improved with adjustable guide vanes to control the flow. The turbines are used for medium heads and large flows. Their hydraulic characteristics make it possible to build relatively high-speed, compact units up to the largest single-unit ratings.
For large hydro plants the output reaches 850 MW, the head 600 m and the runner diameter 9 m. Turbines of up to 800 MW with runners of up to 9 m have been commissioned. The hydraulic profiles are developed in the manufacturer's laboratory in Heidenheim using numerical flow simulation and related hydromechanical calculations, followed by model verification. New projects are geared towards operating flexibility and participation in grid regulation. For small hydro plants there are standardized turbines in horizontal or vertical arrangement, with a spiral casing or in an open flume, with a cantilever, 2-, 3- or 4-bearing layout. The application range extends to 750 m head and 30 MW, and standard sizes cover up to 250 m and 18 MW.
Deliveries include turbines for the Itaipu hydro plant (800 MW at a head of 118.4 m), Grand Coulee III (820 MW, runner 9.7 m), Xingo (6 × 535 MW), Longtan (7 × 790 MW, head 140 m), Xi Luo Du (3 × 784 MW, head 197 m), Xiaowan (6 × 714 MW), Jin Ping II (8 × 610 MW; the first use of a splitter-blade runner on a large machine) and Revelstoke (512 MW). The high-head Rovina-Piastra delivers 133 MW at a head of 554 m, and the low-head Omkareshwar 8 × 66.3 MW at a head of about 30 m.
To improve water quality, aerating runners are produced; the first one was installed at Norris Dam in 1991. Air enters the water through hollow runner blades, and the dissolved oxygen content downstream of the plant increases. The turbines are supplied together with shut-off valves (spherical and butterfly), HyCon Go governors and generators from the manufacturer. Applications are dam-toe and diversion hydro plants, refurbishment with runner replacement, and small hydro plants.
