DST-N – saturated steam turbines for nuclear power plants

DST-N is a series of steam turbines for nuclear power plants operating on saturated steam from the steam generators of pressurised water reactors. The low-speed versions are rated for 1500 rpm at 50 Hz or 1800 rpm at 60 Hz. The manufacturer's overall steam turbine range reaches 1500 MW.

Description

The DST-N series is intended for turbine plants of nuclear power plants with pressurised water reactors. The main difference from thermal station turbines is that the steam is saturated rather than superheated, so the stages work in the wet steam region. The steam generators of such units deliver saturated steam, so the initial steam parameters are low and the volumetric flow is large. In the flow path the steam quickly becomes wet, and this determines the design of the turbine and the composition of the turbine plant. For this reason moisture removal is provided in the turbine path, and steam separation between the cylinders in the turbine plant.

According to the catalogue, DST-N turbines are made in low-speed and high-speed versions. The low-speed turbine runs at half speed, 1500 rpm at 50 Hz or 1800 rpm at 60 Hz. This speed reduces centrifugal loads on the long blades of the last stages, so it is chosen for large nuclear turbines. Four-pole generators of the DGen-N series rated 650–1700 MVA are provided for the low-speed turbines. Parameters of a specific turbine follow the unit project and are clarified on request. A high-speed version is also provided in the catalogue.

Because of the high steam wetness, moisture separator reheaters (MSR) are used in the turbine plant. They remove moisture from the steam after the high-pressure cylinder and heat it before the low-pressure cylinder, which reduces blade wear. The manufacturer makes such apparatus in its heat exchange equipment range, so they can be ordered together with the turbine, along with condensers and low- and high-pressure heaters. The turbines use a modular design, three-dimensional blading, large-diameter welded rotors for the LP cylinder and seals that raise efficiency. Large welded rotors are needed for the LP cylinder because the large steam flow makes the last stages big. The modular design simplifies manufacture and assembly of components at the works and installation on site.

Turbine equipment for nuclear power plants is made in Changwon (Korea) and Plzeň (Czech Republic). The manufacturer is the largest supplier of nuclear plant equipment in Korea and holds ASME N, NA, NPT, NS and KEPIC certificates.
