Description

Deriaz diagonal turbines are a separate branch of hydraulic machines. Unlike the radial-axial Francis turbine, the diagonal machine has adjustable runner blades, and the flow passes through the runner at an angle to the axis. This allows high efficiency to be kept under large changes in head and load, which is why the Deriaz type is used in reversible pump-turbines of pumped storage plants with a wide range of operating heads.

The manufacturer's experience is confirmed by specific plants. In 1969 reversible Deriaz pump-turbines rated 100,000 kVA at 277 rpm were commissioned at the Takane Daiichi plant (Chubu Electric), the company's first reversible machines of this type. In 1993 unit 2 was started at the Takami plant (Hokkaido Electric), a Deriaz pump-turbine of 103 MW, the world's first variable-speed pumped storage plant with a turbine of this type. In 2019 this unit underwent major reconstruction. The pump-turbine and the motor-generator were uprated to 126 MW and 128,500 kVA with a rotational speed range of 231 ± 23 rpm. The same manufacturer also builds Francis, Kaplan, Pelton and Bulb turbines, so the machine type is chosen for the head and flow of a particular plant, and the characteristics are confirmed on its own model test stand.

The runner with the blade-turning mechanism, the guide vane apparatus and the flow path are designed using CFD analysis and model tests on the manufacturer's own stand. The drive of the blades and guide vanes can be made with hybrid servomotors, which reduce the oil volume in the governing system. Together with the pump-turbine the manufacturer supplies the motor-generator, the AC excitation system and the variable-speed control panel.

Applications: pumped storage and hydro plants with large head variation, modernisation of existing Deriaz units. Variable speed combined with adjustable blades gives a wide operating range and the ability to regulate power in pumping mode to stabilise the power system frequency.

Turbine deliveries of the company and its parent companies cover Japan (over 30,000 MW), North America (over 16,000 MW), Latin America (over 23,000 MW), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (over 3,000 MW), and Asia and Oceania (over 20,000 MW).

Questions and answers

How does a Deriaz turbine differ from a Francis turbine?

Its runner blades are adjustable, and the flow passes at an angle to the axis. Therefore efficiency stays high under large changes in head and load.

What are the parameters of the Takami plant unit after reconstruction?

After the 2019 reconstruction the pump-turbine and motor-generator are rated 126 MW and 128,500 kVA at a rotational speed of 231 ± 23 rpm.

When were the company's first reversible Deriaz machines commissioned?

In 1969 at the Takane Daiichi plant, rated 100,000 kVA at 277 rpm.
