Description

The design is simple, so it was upgraded step by step over the years, raising performance without losing a reliability that exceeds 99.5 %. The temperature distribution in the machine is balanced, operation is straightforward, and the turbine can be started and stopped without time restrictions. Base load is reached in about 20 minutes, and the grid frequency regulation rate is 50 MW/min. For peaking plants and power system stability these figures matter.

The compressor is axial, 15-stage, with variable guide vanes. The annular combustor is lined with tiles that are replaced individually and has 24 low-emission dry premix burners for gas and liquid fuel. The rotor is single-shaft, disc type, with internal air cooling, Hirth face splines and a central tie rod. The four-stage air-cooled turbine has an axial exhaust, and the rotor displacement system RDS maintains small radial clearances. The generator is driven from the cold end, and all blades can be replaced without removing the rotor.

At ISO conditions on methane the turbine delivers 340 MW, exhaust gas flow is 755 kg/s, exhaust temperature is 593 °C and minimum GT load is 30 %. The 1+1 combined cycle gives 495 MW net at an efficiency of 60 %, and the 2+1 combined cycle 992 MW at an efficiency of 60.3 %, with turndown depths of 35 % and 20 %. Fuels are natural gas, off-gases enriched with hydrocarbons, mixtures with up to 40 % hydrogen, diesel and high-speed diesel fuel, and naphtha. Two units have been running on a mixture with hydrogen since 2006 and have accumulated more than 300,000 equivalent hours. NOx is up to 15 ppm on gas and 60 ppm on liquid fuel, or 25 ppm with a small amount of water injection.

The interval between overhauls reaches 5 years depending on the duty. For existing machines the MXL2, AirFlex and flexibility packages are available. MXL2 replaces the combustor with a version with the SAS-UP2 system, the turbine vane carrier, rotating and stationary blades of stages 1–4, strengthens the cooling of stator and rotor parts and improves the TBC thermal barrier coating. The package is installed during a planned major overhaul. In mode M it gives up to +25 MW of net output, and in mode XL it extends the overhaul interval by up to 41 thousand equivalent hours. The generator can be disconnected and used as a synchronous condenser. More than 140 units are installed, with a total operating time of over 5 million equivalent hours.
