Description
A generator transformer takes the generator voltage and raises it to the grid voltage, so such machines are installed at thermal, nuclear and hydropower plants as step-up units. Rated voltage reaches 1,200 kV and rating 1,500 MVA. Autotransformers link networks of different voltage classes, and separate-winding transformers work at 220-1,200 kV substations. Traction transformers supply railway traction substations. The range covers the whole chain from the generator busbars to the transmission network and railway traction supply. Production is located at the Hamakawasaki plant in Kawasaki, which also builds GIS and surge arresters, and at the Mie plant.
Every transformer undergoes a full test cycle in the company's own test center, and the company's high-voltage laboratories are JAB accredited. The machine arrives at the site with parameters confirmed at the factory. The mechanical strength of the design is confirmed by a large volume of short-circuit withstand tests. They show that the windings and clamping withstand electrodynamic forces without deformation. For critical grid infrastructure this is one of the main arguments when choosing a supplier.
A separate option is ASA (Advanced Site Assembly) transformers for sites with difficult transport conditions. After full factory tests the transformer is dismantled into transport blocks and reassembled at the site in a temporary clean room. Such a room protects the active part from dust and moisture during assembly. Blocks of large ASA transformers are moved on low-loader trailers, and the more difficult the delivery conditions, the greater the saving.
The ASA scheme makes it possible to supply one three-phase transformer instead of three single-phase ones. The substation area is reduced, and civil works and installation become cheaper. For substations in cramped conditions this is often the decisive argument, because a bank of three single-phase machines needs more space and foundations. An example of such a supply is a three-phase 500 kV, 1,000 MVA transformer for the Seibu substation of Chubu Electric.
The transformers are often part of complex projects. Since 1978 the company has completed over 100 turnkey substations abroad with voltages up to 800 kV. For the customer this means one supplier for transformers, GIS and surge arresters, made and tested at the same plants.

Questions and answers
What are the maximum voltage and rating of the power transformers?
Rated voltage up to 1,200 kV, rating up to 1,500 MVA. The range covers generator step-up transformers, autotransformers, separate-winding and traction transformers.
When is an ASA transformer chosen?
For sites with difficult delivery. After factory tests the transformer is dismantled into transport blocks and assembled on site, for example a three-phase 500 kV, 1,000 MVA transformer for the Seibu substation.
How is the mechanical strength of the transformers confirmed?
Every machine undergoes a full test cycle in the company's own test center, and the laboratories are JAB accredited. Short-circuit withstand is confirmed by a large volume of tests performed.
