Single-phase traction and mobile substation transformers

Special-purpose transformers in two groups. Single-phase traction transformers feed the railway overhead contact line, and mobile substation transformers temporarily replace substation equipment. The production programme covers frequencies from 16.7 to 60 Hz.

Description

In addition to transformers for substations and power plants, the manufacturer makes special-purpose transformers in two groups. The first group is traction (trackside) transformers, which feed the railway overhead contact line in single phase. The production programme covers frequencies from 16.7 to 60 Hz, so a transformer can be built both for power-frequency grids and for low-frequency railway systems.

Traction transformers are single-phase because the railway contact line is fed with one phase, and their parameters are tied to the frequency of the traction network. The second group is mobile substation transformers. They are prepared for fast transport to the site of a fault or repair. They are used for temporary replacement of substation equipment during faults, repairs and maintenance. They are also an interim solution when load grows quickly or unpredictably, for example during the development of wind farms and industrial parks, and standby stations for oil and gas exploration and production, mining and similar projects. Such transformers are designed with the transport limits on mass and dimensions in mind.

The design and calculations follow the same methods as for the manufacturer's power transformers: individual design, analysis of impulse and switching overvoltages, short-circuit withstand and thermal calculation. Manufacture takes place at the plant in Tapiószele in Hungary, whose cranes lift up to 280 t. For traction transformers the decisive factors are the grid frequency and the contact line supply scheme, and for mobile ones mass, dimensions and speed of putting into service. The final parameters are agreed with the customer at the technical specification stage. The company works to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, and the environmental management system is registered by NQA, with the scope of registration covering design, manufacture and service of equipment, including for traction.

Testing is carried out in the company's own laboratory in Tapiószele to IEC and IEEE standards. It is accredited by the national body of Hungary to MSZ EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. Installation, maintenance, refurbishment and repair of the product are performed within service support. Specific ratings and voltages of the special transformers are not given on the manufacturer's website; they are determined by the customer's technical specification.

Questions and answers

What frequencies are traction transformers made for?

The production programme covers frequencies from 16.7 to 60 Hz. This makes it possible to build transformers both for power-frequency grids and for low-frequency railway systems.

What are mobile substation transformers used for?

For temporary replacement of substation equipment during faults, repairs and maintenance, and as a reserve when load grows quickly. They are designed with the transport limits on mass and dimensions in mind.

What ratings and voltages do the special transformers have?

Specific values are not given on the manufacturer's website; they are determined by the customer's technical specification. Within the manufacturer's general range this means 20 to 600 MVA, with tests to IEC and IEEE.
