Description
Rectifier transformers link the supply grid with AC/DC and AC/AC converters and bring the input parameters to the values needed for rectification and regulation of the output current. The duty of such transformers is characterised by high currents and a distorted waveform, so the windings, magnetic core and cooling are calculated with harmonics taken into account.
The manufacturer holds a prominent position in supplying rectifier transformers for electrolysis processes, aluminium smelters and other metal refining processes, for DC furnaces in electrometallurgy and for DC traction. Typical applications are DC arc furnaces, electrolysis, aluminium production, graphitising furnaces, traction substations, metal refining and frequency converters for variable-speed electric drives.
A rectifier transformer is often supplied with regulating transformers or autotransformers, saturable reactors and interphase (balancing) transformers. All of them are part of the manufacturer's portfolio. The transformer works for long periods under a large constant load, for example in an electrolysis shop where the line almost never stops, so winding heating and harmonic withstand come first. The regulating autotransformer changes the voltage at the rectifier input, the saturable reactor smoothly corrects the current, and the interphase transformer equalises the load between parallel valve groups. An example of parameters is a new rectifier transformer of 50 MVA, 26.4 kV / 610 V, vector group D d0 y1, OFWF cooling for a US metals producer. At the same site an ester retrofill of a 48 MVA, 26.4 kV / 561 V transformer was carried out.
The insulating liquid may be mineral oil or ester, which reduces the fire load. The manufacturer's design department works closely with production to adapt the transformers to the development of consumers' technologies. The plants have their own test benches for routine, type and special tests to IEC or IEEE. The management system is certified to ISO 9001 by IMQ. Over the last ten years more than one thousand transformers have been made. The manufacturer also operates through subsidiaries in the USA and India, and more than 60 % of turnover is from export. Applications are electrochemistry and electrometallurgy, metallurgical works, and traction substations of metro and railways.
