PST phase shifting transformers

Phase Shifting Transformers (PST) introduce an adjustable phase shift between input and output voltages. This makes it possible to redistribute active power flows between parallel lines. They are used on cross-border and interconnection links and at grid nodes with uneven line loading.

Description

Phase Shifting Transformers (PST) are used in transmission grids to control active power flows. By introducing an adjustable phase shift between the input and output voltages, a PST redistributes flows between parallel lines and interconnections, relieves overloaded sections and allows fuller use of the transfer capacity of existing lines without building new ones. The larger the angle between the voltage vectors of two nodes, the more active power flows from one to the other, so changing the angle makes it possible to direct the flow into the required line.

These are technically complex units, made only to an individual design for the requirements of the transmission system operator. The throughput power, voltage, range and number of angle regulation steps, cooling method and short-circuit withstand are agreed. The rated parameters of PST are not given on the website or in the brochure, so they are defined in the technical specification of the system operator. The shift angle is changed by an on-load tap changer without disconnecting the line. There is no standard range for such apparatus; each one is designed and tested separately for the customer's specific line and grid scheme. This is why a PST is regarded as a means of controlling the grid operating mode rather than an ordinary power transformer.

In the manufacturer's portfolio, PST stand alongside shunt reactors, which control reactive power. Together they solve the task of regulating the operating modes of a trunk grid: active flows are redistributed by the phase shifting transformer, while reactive flows are kept within limits by the reactor. For a transmission system operator, a PST is a way to relieve an overloaded line without changing generation and without building a new route. Such apparatus is installed where parallel lines of different capacity are loaded unevenly and repair or expansion of the grid is difficult. The manufacturer produces about 200 transformers a year, each for the needs of a specific customer.

The manufacturer carries out design, manufacture, installation and support of the equipment throughout its whole life cycle, including supervision of installation and testing on site. The products are made at Italian plants with a certified ISO 9001 management system. Applications are cross-border and interconnection links and grid nodes with uneven loading of parallel lines.

Questions and answers

What does a phase shifting transformer regulate in the grid?

Active power flows. It introduces an adjustable phase shift between input and output voltages and redistributes flows between parallel lines.

Where are PST used?

On cross-border and interconnection links and at grid nodes with uneven loading of parallel lines. This allows existing transfer capacity to be used without new lines.

Which PST parameters does the customer specify?

The throughput power, voltage, range and number of angle regulation steps, cooling method and short-circuit withstand. The design is always individual, per the technical specification of the system operator.
