Power plant auxiliary transformers
Auxiliary transformers supply the auxiliary systems of a power plant unit, stepping the voltage down to the level of the station service distribution network. They are made to an individual design, with mineral oil or ester. They are used at thermal, combined-cycle, hydro and nuclear plants and in large solar and wind farms.

Description
Auxiliary transformers supply the auxiliary systems of the unit: pumps, fans, fuel and water treatment systems, lighting and control systems. They are usually connected to the generator terminals or to the station busbars and step the voltage down to the level of the station service distribution network. Together with generator step-up transformers, this is the second group of apparatus that the manufacturer supplies for power plants. The auxiliary systems run whenever the unit runs, so the station service supply must be stable. The manufacturer produces about 200 transformers a year, and each one is made for the needs of a specific customer. For nuclear plants and large solar or wind farms these units are also made to a separate design. The short-circuit withstand requirements determine how the apparatus copes with fault conditions on the station service busbars. The specific figures for each plant are fixed by the manufacturer and the customer in the technical specification, with the connection diagram and the cooling and fire safety requirements attached.
Like all the manufacturer's products, auxiliary transformers are made to an individual design for a specific plant. The rating, winding voltages, vector group, cooling method and short-circuit withstand requirements are agreed. The published materials do not give rating and voltage ranges for this group, so the parameters are defined together with the factory at the design stage. The standards are IEC, in the edition specified by the customer's technical requirements.
The design is oil-filled. The insulating liquid may be mineral oil or natural or synthetic ester, which improves fire safety. The transformers are supplied for plants on conventional fuel and on renewable sources. The manufacturer carries out design, manufacture, installation and support of the equipment throughout its whole life cycle, including supervision of installation and testing on site, as well as after-sales support.
The products are made at Italian plants with a certified ISO 9001 management system. Environmental management to ISO 14001 is certified by IMQ for the sites in Legnano, Ospitaletto, Novara and Valdagno. Applications are thermal, combined-cycle, hydro and nuclear power plants and large solar and wind farms.

Questions and answers
Which plant systems does an auxiliary transformer supply?
Pumps, fans, fuel and water treatment systems, lighting and control systems of the power unit. It is connected to the generator terminals or to the station busbars.
Does the catalogue give rating and voltage ranges for these transformers?
The published materials do not contain them. The rating, winding voltages and vector group are agreed with the factory for the project of a specific plant.
What insulating liquid is used and to which standards are the transformers made?
Mineral oil or natural or synthetic ester, which improves fire safety. IEC standards are applied per the customer's technical requirements.
