Description
Excitation transformers are intended to supply the thyristor static excitation systems of synchronous generators at power plants. The transformer is normally connected to the generator terminals or to the auxiliary busbars. It steps the voltage down to the level required by the rectifier bridge, and the bridge feeds current into the rotor winding through slip rings.
The load of a thyristor converter is nonlinear. Therefore, higher harmonics, which additionally heat the active part, are taken into account when calculating the windings and cooling. Increased resistance to dynamic effects during field forcing, when the current in the circuit rises sharply, is built in separately. Such a transformer is required to operate reliably throughout the service life of the generator, because busbar voltage and plant stability depend on excitation.
The cast resin dry-type or oil design is chosen according to the installation site and fire safety requirements. In machine halls and enclosed rooms dry-type units are used more often, and oil units are possible on open sites. The vector group, voltage ratio and rating are selected for the specific generator and excitation scheme.
The manufacturer has experience supplying transformers for hydroelectric plants in South America, Europe and Africa and for geothermal plants in Kenya. This points to the main field of application: generating facilities. Special transformers are made to individual technical specifications at the same production sites as the standard cast resin and oil transformers. These are the plants in Montecchio Maggiore and Tezze di Arzignano in the province of Vicenza. Routine tests are carried out under the IEC 60076 series of standards. Specific parameters, namely rating, voltages, connection and cooling, are not published on the manufacturer's website and are determined on request.
Installation and connection follow the plant scheme. The primary winding is connected to the generator terminals or to the auxiliary busbars, and the secondary to the thyristor bridge, while the transformer protection is built into the overall protection system of the generator unit. Temperature monitoring of the windings in dry-type units and monitoring of oil level and temperature in oil units are done with standard sensors wired into the plant control system.
