Description
Furnace transformers are another group of the manufacturer's special products. They supply industrial electric furnaces, arc, induction and others. They are characterized by low secondary voltage at very high secondary currents, so special requirements are placed on the secondary terminals and busbars.
The process requires a wide voltage regulation range. The furnace works in different melting and holding modes, and the transformer must deliver the appropriate voltage level without a shutdown. In addition, the unit has increased resistance to frequent load surges and to short circuits in the furnace circuit, since such events occur regularly in arc furnaces.
The design of the windings and LV bushings, the cooling method and the type of switching device are chosen for the specific furnace and its mode of operation. The design is oil, to the customer's technical specification. Oil cooling removes heat well from windings carrying high currents and withstands the severe conditions of the workshop.
The manufacturer's consumer industries include mining enterprises, cement plants, paper mills and other heavy industry facilities. The manufacturer supplies transformers for them to different countries of the world. Special transformers are made to individual technical specifications at the same production sites as the standard cast resin and oil transformers. These are the plants in Montecchio Maggiore and Tezze di Arzignano in the province of Vicenza. Routine tests are carried out under the IEC 60076 series of standards. Specific parameters, namely rating, voltages, connection and cooling, are not published on the manufacturer's website and are determined on request.
The secondary terminals are important for furnace transformers, because very large currents pass through them. They are made with strong fastening and cooling to withstand heating and electrodynamic forces. The switching device makes it possible to change the voltage step during the process, with a choice between on-load and off-circuit switching depending on the furnace mode. The settings are agreed with the consumer. Each furnace is served by its own transformer, and therefore the manufacturer agrees the rating, voltage steps and cooling scheme with the customer before manufacture begins. Installation includes connecting the high-current LV bushings, checking the insulation and a trial energization at no load.
