Description

Furnace transformers supply electric arc furnaces for melting metal, including conventional ones and those with power electronics in the control circuits, as well as submerged arc furnaces (SAF) and electroslag remelting (ESR) units. These are special units with very high secondary currents, regulated right during the process. According to the manufacturer, about a third of the more than a thousand transformers built over the past ten years are industrial ones, and most of them go for export. The manufacturer closely links its design department with production in order to adapt transformer designs to the development of furnace technology. The secondary voltage is changed in steps under load, so the windings and the regulating device are designed for long-term operation with high currents and a distorted waveform.

Single-phase and three-phase transformers are made for AC and DC furnaces. The parameters of completed projects are as follows: 240 MVA, 36 kV / 1616–1020 V, Dd0, OFWF for a German steelmaker (the Ospitaletto plant). For an American steel plant two transformers of 157/172 MVA, 34.5 kV / 1370–896 V were made. For a nickel plant in Indonesia one of the largest SAF transformers in the world was built, 116 MVA, 33 kV / 2400–330 V, fully interchangeable with the existing units.

The universal Jolly transformer of 28 MVA, 33 kV / 410–249 V, Yd1, is intended for ladle furnaces with differing requirements at several plants. There is also a 12.5 MVA, 26.4 kV / 280 V unit for EAFs. Cooling is usually OFWF, that is, forced oil circulation with a water cooler. To increase safety, furnace and rectifier transformers can be filled with a less flammable ester or converted to ester during retrofit.

The manufacturer's plants have their own test benches for routine, type and special tests to IEC or IEEE and other recognized standards. The management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018. Applications are electric steelmaking and ferroalloy production, non-ferrous metallurgy and foundries.

Questions and answers

What are the rating and primary voltage of the furnace transformers?

In completed projects the rating is from 12.5 to 240 MVA and the primary voltage 26.4–36 kV. The secondary voltage is regulated within 249 to 2400 V.

What cooling is used in furnace transformers?

Usually OFWF, that is, forced oil circulation with a water cooler. To increase safety, the transformer can be filled with a less flammable ester or retrofitted.

Which furnaces are these transformers suitable for?

AC and DC EAFs, submerged arc furnaces (SAF), electroslag remelting units (ESR) and ladle furnaces. For example, the 28 MVA, 33 kV Jolly transformer is intended for ladle furnaces with differing requirements.
