Description
e4 Ultimate Low Loss Amorphous is the third generation of amorphous distribution transformers and, according to the manufacturer, the most energy-efficient distribution transformer in Europe. Work on the range began in 2008 (e2 was the first amorphous transformer in the UK), followed by e3 (2018) and e4 (2024). More than 2300 amorphous transformers have been installed in the UK; in 16 years of operation no core failure has been recorded.
The core (designated AMTx) is wound from amorphous alloy ribbon, that is, metal rapidly cooled from the melt without forming a crystal lattice. The disordered structure and high resistivity reduce magnetisation losses and eddy currents. Together with low current density conductors, this gives minimal total losses, 27 % lower than the Ecodesign Tier 2 (2021) requirements.
The rating range comprises 315, 500, 800, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1600, 2000, 2500 and 3000 kVA, 11 000/415 V, Dyn11, aluminium windings. Transformers up to 1250 kVA are built without radiators. The secondary voltage is lowered to 415 V (instead of 433 V), and +7.5 % is added to the standard five taps, so the voltage at the site can be reduced without additional equipment. No-load/load losses are 215/1940 W for 315 kVA, 675/8630 W for 1600 kVA and 1150/19 000 W for 3000 kVA, all values at 75 °C.
Cooling is ONAN on mineral oil or KNAN on synthetic or natural ester, with free breathing or a hermetically sealed tank. Manufacture is to IEC 60076 or the customer's specification. The off-circuit tap changer has six positions and can be sealed. Painting is to BS 381C (shade 632) and ISO 12944 not lower than C4H. A general arrangement drawing with RMU and LV cabinets is available. Warranty 24 months.
On economics, replacing a 1990s transformer saves up to £380 thousand over its service life, and the payback period of a 1000 kVA unit compared with a 1970s unit is about 2 years at 70 % load. Applications: universities, hospitals, retail chains, industry, data centres, charging hubs.

Questions and answers
What ratings and voltage does the range cover?
315, 500, 800, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1600, 2000, 2500 and 3000 kVA at 11 000/415 V. Vector group Dyn11, aluminium windings.
What losses do these transformers have?
No-load/load losses are 215/1940 W for 315 kVA, 675/8630 W for 1600 kVA and 1150/19 000 W for 3000 kVA. Total losses are 27 % below Ecodesign Tier 2.
Why is the secondary voltage lowered to 415 V?
415 V is adopted instead of 433 V, and +7.5 % is added to the standard five taps. This lowers the voltage at the site without additional equipment.
