Description

Converter and rectifier transformers are among the manufacturer's special products. Converter units are designed to work with 6-, 12-, 18- and 24-pulse rectification schemes. Several phase-shifted secondary windings significantly reduce the current harmonics that the converter injects into the network. The more pulses, the cleaner the current waveform on the supply side.

Such units supply medium-voltage frequency converters for high-power pumps, compressors and fans, traction rectifiers of railways and metro, and industrial rectifier installations. Rectifier transformers are used in DC installations for electrochemistry, electroplating and metallurgy. The load in such systems is nonlinear, so the windings and the cooling system are designed with higher harmonics and the additional heating they cause in mind.

The design is cast resin dry-type or oil. Dry-type units are convenient for enclosed rooms where fire safety matters, and oil units are placed outdoors and at high ratings. The final winding connection, the number of secondary windings and the cooling method are chosen for the specific converter.

The manufacturer supplies equipment for railways and metro (Turkey, Venezuela, Peru, Italy, the Turin–Naples high-speed line) and also for mining and oil and gas facilities. Special transformers are made to individual technical specifications at the same production sites as the standard cast resin and oil transformers. These are the plants in Montecchio Maggiore and Tezze di Arzignano in the province of Vicenza. Routine tests are carried out under the IEC 60076 series of standards. Specific parameters, namely rating, voltages, connection and cooling, are not published on the manufacturer's website and are determined on request.

When selecting such a transformer, the rating and duty of the converter are taken into account: load duration, permissible overload and the requirements for harmonic content in the network. The windings are made with reinforced bracing to withstand the mechanical forces during valve switching and short circuits in the rectifier circuit. Rated voltages and rating are agreed with the designer of the converter installation. Operating conditions are agreed with the customer. Special attention is paid to overheating from harmonics and to even load sharing between the secondary windings.
