Description
Besides standard series, the manufacturer makes bespoke distribution transformers, so-called special-purpose ones, and large distribution transformers. Demand for them has grown with the development of energy storage systems (BESS) and other renewable energy sites. Large distribution transformers are units up to 9 MVA with a high voltage of 11 or 33 kV and a low voltage below 1 kV, with two, three or five windings.
The design can be fully tailored to the requirements of a specific project. For a project, the breathing type (free breathing or hermetically sealed tank), the core material (amorphous alloy or CRGO) and the winding material (copper or aluminium), the ratio and the impedance are changed. Multi-winding versions (three or more windings), an electrostatic screen (K-factor), a different vector group, cooling type and voltage regulation are possible. The standard is IEC 60076. A special design needs a longer delivery time than stock standard products.
In a BESS, the MV transformer sits between the battery inverters and the medium-voltage network. During charging it steps the voltage down, during discharging it steps it up. It locally isolates the site if individual battery blocks fail, and improves power quality and short-circuit protection. One, two or more battery blocks can be connected to one transformer by means of dual and multiple LV windings.
The manufacturer has supplied more than 1350 MV transformers for BESS with a total capacity of about 12 GW, working with Tesla, BYD and CATL. Examples are eight transformers of 4.8 and 3.2 MVA 33/0.4–0.4 kV for the Hallen BESS (BYD) and 75 transformers for the Cernay BESS (240 MW / 480 MWh, France).
They are used in energy storage systems, at solar farms, in charging hubs, data centres and at industrial sites with non-standard voltages. The plants are in Leeds (UK) and Chennai (India). The site of over 5500 m² has three production bays by transformer type and size, two test stands and two paint booths, and the engineering team in the UK adapts designs to project requirements.
