Description

Auxiliary transformers step the voltage down to a safe level to supply auxiliary loads and site equipment, including lighting, CCTV, fire suppression, control and climate systems. They also separate the control circuits from the high voltage of the main power circuit, which is important for safety and for normal operation of site equipment. Auxiliary transformers are designed individually and are usually installed as part of the substation power transformer package.

Typical primary voltage is 6.6 kV, 11 kV, 11–6.6 kV (dual) or 33 kV, secondary 415 or 433 V. The rating of two-winding units is up to 4500 kVA; in three- and multi-winding units it can be higher. Vector groups are Dyn11, Dyn1 or any others per IEC 60076.

Supplies include a 1 MVA auxiliary transformer at the Erskine site and a 1.5 MVA auxiliary transformer in the package for BESS Hallen (32 MW / 32 MWh), where the manufacturer also supplied eight MV transformers of 4.8 and 3.2 MVA. Like the manufacturer's other transformers, the auxiliary units are liquid-filled (mineral oil or ester). They meet the Ecodesign Tier 2 loss requirements and undergo factory tests, with a 24-month warranty from shipment.

At one of the sites a visiting team of electricians and installers erected the power and auxiliary transformers within a few weeks. They installed the cooling bank, fans, conservator and bushings, filled the coolant, and carried out the wiring, cable work and testing. The site has a 49.9 MW (peak) solar plant with a 45.5 MW / 99 MWh BESS.

For sites that need both to earth the neutral of a 33 kV network and supply site auxiliaries, the combined earthing/auxiliary transformer AET is offered. Applications: BESS, solar and wind farm substations, combined-cycle and peaking power plants, industrial sites. Manufacturing is in Leeds (UK) and Chennai (India); the site of more than 5500 m² has three production bays by transformer type and size, two test stands and two paint booths, and the engineering team in the UK adapts designs to project requirements.

Questions and answers

What voltages are the auxiliary transformers built for?

Primary voltage is 6.6 kV, 11 kV, 11–6.6 kV or 33 kV, secondary 415 or 433 V. The rating of two-winding units is up to 4500 kVA.

Which vector groups are available?

Dyn11, Dyn1 or any others per IEC 60076. For three- and multi-winding units the rating can exceed 4500 kVA.

Is there a solution that combines earthing and site supply?

Yes, the combined earthing/auxiliary transformer AET for 33 kV networks. It earths the neutral and supplies the site auxiliaries.
