Description
Autotransformers are part of the list of special products. In an autotransformer, the higher-voltage and lower-voltage windings share a common part. Therefore, at a small transformation ratio, the unit is noticeably lighter, more compact and more economical than an ordinary two-winding transformer of the same through-rated power, and its losses are lower.
Autotransformers are used to interconnect networks of close voltage classes, to match voltages in industrial power supply systems, to start high-power induction motors at reduced voltage, and also as regulating units. When starting a motor, the autotransformer lowers the stator voltage, limiting the starting current and the impact on the network, and after run-up it is taken out of the circuit.
The design is oil or dry-type depending on the rating, voltage and installation site. The common winding provides no galvanic isolation between the sides, so the neutral mode and the short-circuit current levels are taken into account when designing the network. The test program corresponds to the manufacturer's standard transformers.
The ISO 9001:2015 certificate from DNV Business Assurance Italy confirms the company's quality management system. The scope of the certificate covers design, manufacture and support of oil-filled, dry-type and cast resin transformers, reactors and autotransformers. Special transformers are made to individual technical specifications at the same production sites as the standard cast resin and oil transformers. These are the plants in Montecchio Maggiore and Tezze di Arzignano in the province of Vicenza. Routine tests are carried out under the IEC 60076 series of standards. Specific parameters, namely rating, voltages, connection and cooling, are not published on the manufacturer's website and are determined on request.
Typical connection schemes depend on the task. For interconnecting two networks the unit is connected permanently, for motor starting for a short time, and for regulation with a tap changer. An oil autotransformer is placed in a tank with a conservator and bushings for both sides, and a dry-type one in a metal enclosure. Rating and voltages are selected for the specific site according to the technical specification. After installation a trial energization is carried out. Before energizing, the insulation, polarity and correct connection of the taps are checked.
