Description
Transformers with an amorphous alloy core are intended for customers who pay particular attention to the cost of electricity and CO₂ emissions. Amorphous steel has no crystalline structure, so its magnetization losses are much lower than in traditional cold-rolled electrical steel. According to the manufacturer, no-load losses are reduced by up to 70 %. A transformer is energized around the clock, so lower no-load losses give a noticeable annual saving of electricity and a smaller carbon footprint.
The line is made in two designs, cast resin and oil, with ratings up to 5 MVA, insulation class up to 52 kV and BIL 250 kV. Structurally, apart from the core material, the units match the manufacturer's standard cast resin and oil transformers. The package, optional accessories and test program are the same as in the corresponding base series. These are routine, type and special tests under the IEC 60076 series of standards.
The manufacturer names additional operating advantages. Lower losses mean less heating, which slows insulation aging and extends transformer service life. Amorphous alloy sheets are not subject to corrosion that would degrade the characteristics of the unit. The series came about as a result of cooperation between a young team and an experienced group, and the selection of quality raw materials is intended for long service. More than 500 amorphous transformers of both types have been installed.
They are used at distribution substations with low average loading, where no-load losses dominate. These are residential and commercial facilities and renewable energy networks. A separate group of consumers is facilities with corporate decarbonization goals. The same guidelines as for ordinary cast resin and oil transformers are used to select the design.
The amorphous ribbon core consists of thin sheets, and this is what reduces magnetization losses. Short-circuit losses depend on the windings, so the saving relates primarily to no-load operation. The choice between cast resin and oil designs is made by the same criteria as for ordinary transformers: installation site, fire safety requirements and environmental conditions. This is convenient when the same package as the base series is needed.

Questions and answers
By how much are the no-load losses of such transformers reduced?
According to the manufacturer, by up to 70 % compared with standard transformers with electrical steel. This is especially noticeable at substations with low average loading.
What rating and insulation class do amorphous core transformers have?
Rating up to 5 MVA with insulation class up to 52 kV and BIL 250 kV. Designs are cast resin and oil.
Which standards are these transformers tested to?
To the IEC 60076 series of standards, the same as the corresponding base series. The program includes routine, type and special tests.
