ESDB XS/S/M/L, self-regenerating breathers for smart transformers
eSDB are self-regenerating breathers for transformers and reactors that regenerate the silica gel by heating according to the actual state of the sorbent. The four models XS, S, M and L cover equipment from OLTCs and arc-suppression coils to generator step-up transformers above 200 MVA with an oil mass from 100 t.

Description
Moisture accelerates transformer aging, so the air entering the conservator as the transformer breathes must be dried. An ordinary silica gel breather needs inspection rounds and sorbent replacement. The eSDB works differently. The device continuously monitors temperature, humidity and the condition of the silica gel, and starts heating regeneration when the sorbent is actually saturated, not on a schedule. The unit belongs to the eDevices family for digital transformers and is part of the MeDICA monitoring ecosystem.
Each model has two silica gel tanks. While one regenerates, the other keeps drying the air, so the transformer is never left without protection. In the M and L models the cycle is controlled redundantly, with dual feedback from a load cell and a humidity sensor. The enclosure is compact, without external wiring, made of machined aluminum and stainless steel, and resistant to transformer oil, salt fog and ultraviolet. If the silica gel gets contaminated with oil during installation, it is replaced on site. Through the built-in USB-A data logger, data is downloaded and firmware updated without a laptop or cables.
The supply is 115–230 V AC/DC ±10 %, 50/60 Hz, with overvoltage protection by an AC varistor and a fuse. The inrush current is below 10 A, and during regeneration the current does not exceed 3 A. For connection to the SCADA system there are 2 × 4–20 mA, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP and relay signals. The degree of protection is IP65, and the terminal box is IP66. Corrosion protection is C5-M, with CX in RAL 7035 available to order for offshore. The operating temperature is from −40 to +80 °C, and connection is by DIN or EN flanges.
The model is chosen by the type of equipment and the oil mass. The XS is fitted to OLTCs, Petersen arc-suppression coils, air-filled cable boxes and traction transformers. The S is intended for phase-shifting transformers and shunt reactors up to 60 MVA with up to 40 t of oil. The M is designed for network, step-up and phase-shifting transformers and reactors of 60–200 MVA with an oil mass of 40–80 t. The L works on generator step-up transformers, HVDC equipment, furnace transformers and underground cavern transformers.

Questions and answers
Which eSDB model should be chosen for a network transformer of 60–200 MVA?
For network, step-up and phase-shifting transformers of 60–200 MVA with an oil mass of 40–80 t, the eSDB M is suitable. For equipment above 200 MVA with oil from 100 t, the L model is used.
What interfaces does the eSDB have for a monitoring system?
Two 4–20 mA analog outputs, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP and relay signals. Data is also stored on the built-in USB-A data logger.
What conditions can the breather operate in?
Ambient temperature from −40 to +80 °C, degree of protection IP65, terminal box IP66. Standard corrosion protection is C5-M, and for offshore the CX version.
